Russell Martin was fired as Rangers manager on Sunday night after a poorly shaped run, and Stephen Gerrard is now tilted to return to Ibrox

Liverpool legend Stephen Gerrard may be ready for a sentimental return to the Rangers following Russell Martin’s firing. The former Southampton chief was shown the Ibrox door on Sunday evening.

Despite arriving at the club only this summer, Martin faced pressure, especially from his supporters. He won one victory in seven league matches at the helm.

Sunday’s inactive 1-1 stalemate with Falkirk proved to be ffin’s final nail, with the Rangers in eighth place – a whopping 11-point drift of the summit. After the match, Martin was forced to travel separately from his team’s coach and needed a security escort.

The Rangers issued a statement late Sunday night amid growing speculation about the manager’s future.

“All transition periods take time, but the results do not meet the club’s expectations.

“Assistant head coach Matt Gill and first-team coach Mike Williamson will also be leaving.

“Russell and his staff have worked very hard throughout their time at the club, and we appreciate their efforts and hopefully for them for the future.

“A further update from the club will continue in time.”

The hunt for Martin’s successor begins, and the betting company has made Gerrard an early favourite. If appointed, you will see him return to the very club where he handed him his maiden opportunity as a senior manager.

After starting his coaching career on the youth side of Liverpool, Gerrard took the reins with the Rangers in the summer of 2018, leading him to the glory of the Scottish premiership in the 2020/21 season.

However, he left for Aston Villa in November 2021, and within a year the doors began to appear. His most recent administrative role was Al Ettifak, the pro league side of Saudi Arabia, left the club in January this year.

According to the Guardian, Gerrard is currently a “strong competitor” with a recently vacant position at Ibrox. However, he is expected to face tough competition between former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Roll and former Everton boss Sean Dish. Both are currently unemployed.
