Chelsea are poised to delve into the January transfer market for their new central defender. Enzo Maresca is working on absential spich in his defensive lineup, Levi Colwill is on the sidelines due to injuries, and Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adalabioyo both struggle with fitness.
Trevoh Chalobah’s recent firing against Brighton led to a one-game Premier League suspension, further highlighting the team’s defensive flaws. Maresca expressed interest in strengthening his defense during the summer transfer period. Ronald Araujo of Barcelona and Murillo of Nottingham Forest were among the potential targets.
However, Mark Guehe’s move, who has finished his contract next summer, is off the table.
Despite the defender being highly regarded by Maresca, he will not return to his previous clubs where Liverpool and several other European clubs have shown interest.
It has been reported that Guehi will be eager to join Real Madrid if the Spanish giants come to ask for his signature.
Meanwhile, Liverpool was able to revive England International’s pursuit after Crystal Palace agreed to a deal in the summer, with only the 11th hour withdrawal.
Maresca confirmed earlier this year that he is a fan of Guech, but it appears he will not approve the 25-year-old’s move in January.
Last season, the Chelsea boss said:
“I like the centre we have and I like the various central defenders in Italy, Spain and France, but that’s not going to buy players.
“If there’s injuries to these central defenders, it’s normal circumstances where there’s speculation there. There’s nothing there.”
Chelsea have been one of the Premier League’s biggest spenders in recent seasons, but it remains to be seen how they will approach the January market in search of a new central defender.
