Manchester United’s determination to retain Bruno Fernandez is likely to be challenged in the upcoming January transfer period. Both Saudi Arabia and European clubs may be trying to capitalize on the club’s disruption in bidding for talented playmakers due to United’s current struggle.
Saudi club Al-Hilal previously offered Fernandez an astounding £100 million in the summer. This has made the Portuguese star publicly say he will leave if he feels it’s the right time for United to win cash for him. However, both United and Fernandez, who are on contracts until 2027, have rejected the bid, and Fernandez expressed their desire to continue playing at the highest level in key competitions.
Insiders suggest that Saudi clubs are likely to try and seduce Fernandez in January, according to Manchester Evening News. This would more than double his current wages.
For the top European clubs participating in the Champions League, Fernandez offers the advantage of not being tied up in the cup, given United were unable to compete in Europe this season.
Despite the 31-year-old pledged his commitment to United over the summer, the season hasn’t started much on Reuben Amorim’s side.
United also experienced a humiliating Carabao Cup defeat in the town of Grimsby, but Amorim continues to stick with his controversial decision to unfold Fernandez into a deeper midfield role.
Fernandez has been visible in visceral this season, demanding more defensive duties and is used in roles that clearly do not maximize his offensive skill.
However, after a disappointing start to his first full season with United, Amorim, who is feeling the heat, shows no sign of turning Fernandez into a forward position than thriving.
Speaking last month, the United boss said:
“Maybe he doesn’t have the same freedom to go inside the box, but he’s there and he’s close to the box and he can take his shot.
“I think Bruno is in a position to have more possessions, he’s trying to get more control over the game.
