Frank Lampard transformed Coventry from a relegation candidate to a championship title candidate in 10 months.
Frank Lampard had a tough gig when he was appointed manager of the City of Coventry on November 28, 2024. He walked into a toxic atmosphere fueled by the looting of the club’s legendary Mark Robbins and the rage at the prevailing negativity around the club’s future.
Lampard has been off work since leaving his interim position at Chelsea at the end of the 2022/23 season. For many Sky Blues fans, he was seen as a PR appointment by owner Doug King. Doug King accused many of them of hiring celebrities to seek the spotlight.
There were three weeks between the departure of longtime manager Robbins and the announcement of Lampard’s arrival. Meanwhile, rumors were swirling. Coventry was 17th in the championship and stayed in the rut.
It took a while, but in 10 months there is no more suspicion that King made the right call. Lampard has messed up the team and removed the lew humiliation that was founded to transform Coventry into one of the most exciting teams in the country.

The Sky Blues went from 17th to fifth, making the playoffs last season, when Danballad’s header broke their hearts when they lost to Sunderland. But that heartbreak that came two years after Luton’s final penalty shootout loss in the playoffs, made them stronger, and in eight games in the 2025/26 Championship season, Coventry sits second unbeaten.
Coventry has already plundered 22 goals this season. This is more than 8 more than the next best attack in tier 2. They boast the co-owner of the cleanest sheets of Haji Wright (8), top championship scorer Milan Van Ewick’s co-top assist maker (5), and goalkeeper Karl Rushworth (4).
Lampard’s side attempted 137 shots in eight games after smashing Millwall 4-0 in Den on Wednesday night. The expected total target (XG) is 17.3. It’s four complete four, more than the second-place mid-table Southampton.
Middlesbrough may sit on the championship table for now, but there is a lot of evidence to suggest that Coventry is the best aspect of the league. So how did Lampard manage it? The answer is not in the transfer market.
Matt Grimes’ £4 million signature from Swansea in January was transformative and gave the Sky Blues one of the league’s best deep passers-by, but Lampard’s success is based on the best earnings of the players he inherited. Coventry paid two players transfer fees this summer, but considering they were able to maintain their top talent, their windows can be considered a great success.
Right-back Van Ewick and offensive midfielder Jacques Douni were strongly linked to the relocation, but both remained in place. They are one of the players who seem to be able to thrive in the Premier League, and the fact that they stayed with Coventry shows their belief in what Lampard is doing.
Victor Torp makes a good impression as a Lampard-style box-to-box midfielder and goal threat. Bobby Thomas and Liam Kitcheng remain strong foundations at the back. And there’s a pace in the wings in the form of Sakamoto Tatsuhiro and Brandon Thomas Asante.
The attack was undoubtedly the most attention-grabbing 7-1 thrashing from QPR, which frowned in August, but the improvements came across the pitch. “When we got in, we quickly analyzed and analyzed the issues and we acknowledged too many goals,” Lampard told Football Focus last season.
“We weren’t compact enough. We weren’t offensive enough, so we really tried to prioritize the ball work. The players bought it for everything we were trying to say, so the players did it.
Lampard, who was an elite player himself, found a way to connect with his players. He is also driven by his perception of him as a manager who struggled with his second spell in the Derby at Everton, at the top level.
Lampard led the Derby to the playoff final in 2019, defeated 2-1 by Aston Villa. If Coventry continues his current path, he may not need to resort to the lottery this time around.
