Ipswich’s attitude about giving Blackburn a “non-opposed” goal after EFL replay decision

The EFL has decided to force Blackburn Rover and Ipswich Town to replay the championship match in full after being abandoned in the 80 minutes last month.

Ipswichtown has no plans to allow Blackburn Rovers to score unopposed goals in a controversial match. The original fixture on September 20th was abandoned in 80 minutes due to a flooded pitch when heavy rain hit Blackburn’s ewood park.

The Rovers were 1-0 when game umpire Stephen Martin called time in the game. Todd Cantwell’s second half penalty gave Blackburn the lead shortly after Ipswich was reduced to 10 men following a Jacob Greaves red card.

Both clubs were consulted about their perspective prior to the EFL’s decision that Blackburn was “very disappointed.” And the Rovers Chief will be even more disappointed to find out that Ipswich isn’t planning on giving them a 1-0 lead right after kickoff.

Sky Sports reports that Kieran McKenna’s side will allow Blackburn to become hostile at the start of the match and will not allow him to achieve his goal. No dates for rescheduled fixtures are given.

The EFL may have decided to award Blackburn a 1-0 victory and count it as a completed match or play a stop with the remaining 10 minutes and another date. Instead, Blackburn and Ipswich are fixtures for improved importance now, so they will need to lock the horn again in Lancashire.

In a statement, the EFL described the decision as “incredibly difficult” and added that it plans to consult with the club regarding amendments to existing rules regarding waiver. “The (EFL) board has comprehensively considered all available options in accordance with regulations along with the statements made by both clubs,” it read.

“It was ultimately decided that the fixture should be fully regenerated, and the decision should be based on the recent precedents related to abandoned equipment, and wherever possible, on the complete set of equipment that will be made in line with the conclusions of the day.

“The board recognized this was a very difficult decision and agreed to consult with the club about the best approach to developing new guidance to consider in the event of abandonment of games.”

Blackburn said: “We retained both the scoreline and the numbers advantages, and with just 10 minutes of normal time, the Rover was on the course to record his third championship victory in four games.

“Blackburn Rovers respects the process that the EFL has undertaken and acknowledges the complexities involved, but the club is extremely disappointed with the outcome.

“While Blackburn Rovers is committed to maintaining the integrity of the competition, we strongly feel that the decision to regenerate the entire fixture does not accurately reflect the situation that day. The club is now making it even more clear from the EFL, considering all options including the right to appeal the decision and will not make further comments on the issue at this stage.”
