Reuben Amorim is facing increasing pressure after a disappointing start to the season. The Portuguese tactician has managed only 19 wins in his first 49 matches in his 11 months with the club, and despite leading his team to the Europa League final, he has struggled to influence the domestic front.

Following his 15th place finish in the 2024/25 season, United now has won two of their six games so far, suggesting that the 40-year-old’s job could be at risk if there were no significant improvements in results and performance. However, according to Manchester Evening News, United Board continues to support him and in light of these developments, bringing you the latest news on the future of the former Sports CP manager.

Southgate is not interested

Gareth Southgate reportedly declines an offer from United if he rejects Amorim. The Ex-England manager was previously one of the leading candidates for United’s job in March 2024.

Southgate’s commitment to England ahead of the European Championships thwarted United’s attempts to launch discussions at the time, but he is currently out of work. However, the Daily Star reports that Southgate is not in a hurry, leaving his options open.

Southgate is especially good friends with Dan Ashworth. The former Red Devils sports director had plans to appoint Southgate during his tenure at United before leaving five months later.

Time of change

Sky Sports critic Alan Smith believes Amorim’s tenure at United is nearing an end, suggesting he has reached a point of no revenue. “It’s reached a point where it won’t come back. I don’t think things will get better,” Smith told Sky Sports News. “He was in the hot seat for up to a year and had a transfer window, but there’s no sign of improvement. One or two matches, you get a flash.

“I’ve never seen a manager approach their business as it is for now. It’s a well-running path around his system and the fact that it might not be suitable for many players, but you’re not saying that he shouldn’t even do better in that system. Mbeumo has a good player.

“There are many stories of them not intending to fire him until a certain day towards the end of the year. It’s hard to read the minds of United hierarchies about what they’re thinking, but I think they know.

“It’s absolutely not safe.”

He appears to be convinced that Amorim’s position will remain safe, with journalist Fabrizio Romano showing that the manager will not be fired immediately, but that future equipment can prove to be decisive. “I’m not saying here that Amorim is absolutely safe,” he said.

“Amorim’s work is absolutely unsafe at this moment as Man United wants to see the outcome and needs to perform in a different way. But that doesn’t mean Manchester United has already begun the process of meeting Southgate or appointing Gareth Southgate as the new boss.

“Wait and see what happens. But certainly the next game is important for Reuben Amorim.”

Timeline and resignation concerns

Amorim may only have one more month to persuade his boss who deserves their continued support. United were able to postpone Amorim’s firing until he completed a year of service due to the considerable compensation package he was entitled to receive. According to the Daily Mail, United will have to pay a substantial £12 million bill if they reject a 40-year-old before reaching the 12-month rep.

Conversely, there is fear that Amorim may be the one who causes his own departure. United co-owner Ineos is reportedly concerned that Amorim is likely to choose to resign before heading to x as there are suggestions that he may take this route to protect his managerial position as he is increasingly angry at the relentless scrutiny after his defeat.

As reported by the I newspaper, I-Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos are ready to support their managers, but Amorim may soon need to consider resigning to “maintain his management career.” The United boss is said to be surprised by the intense scrutiny surrounding his tenure, with United’s assessment of losses likely a “knee-down” response.
