PGMOL now responded days after Mikel Arteta and Bukayo Saka were furious at Val Cole with Arsenal’s narrow victory over Newcastle United

PGMOL Chief Judge Howard Webb said the decision to overturn Arsenal’s penalty against Newcastle United was the correct call. The people of North London thought they had a penalty when Magpie goalkeeper Nick Pope appeared to have beaten Victor Gyoker to an 18-yard box.

However, after consulting with VAR, Premier League umpire Jarred Gillet changed his mind after determining that Pope had touched enough ball to ensure a decision that was overturned. Bukayo Saka was furious when he saw the Gillette U-turn, but Mikel Arteta also blew the phone out in a post-match interview.

After seeing the incident, Webb insisted on the referee team, and Var made the decision right. Officials from the Premier League match said in the microphone up show: “VAR checks for penalties.

“When he does that, he sees Gökeres clearly reaching the ball and thrusts forward a little, but importantly, Nick Pope moves forward with his right foot and is out of the direction the ball is in, so he gets a very clear touch on the ball.

“The Pope then plantes his feet in the ground. He doesn’t drive it to Gyökeres. There’s a clear gap between the two players after Pope plays the ball and the two players get together very normally.

“The action by the Pope is normal, not reckless, it’s just a kick out towards the ball, the ball deviates and does not contact the player until the ball plays. The contact happens quite normally then so VAR uses it well to intervene to show what actually happened.

“I think the deviation is very clear. When you touch Gyökeres, you can see Pope’s right leg coming in. You touch the ball and move the ball in a different direction than it was previously in.

Arsenal's Victor Gyoker fell to the ground after a challenge by Newcastle United's Nick Pope and was awarded a penalty, and VAR overturned during a Premier League match between Newcastle United and Arsenal at St James' Park on September 28, 2025.

“Then when he comes into contact with the ball and puts his foot on the ground, there’s a separation between him and Gyökeres. At that point there’s no contact.

“There was an important part in this in that the judge did not recognize that touch by the Pope in real time, so when Val saw it, he saw it as a clear and obvious error.

“So the referee was able to go to the screen and see the really important aspects of it and make his own judgment. “Yes, I saw the touch, so it starts with the ball that was dropped, not the foul.”

Arteta was furious at the decision to change the call on the field, and told the press after the game:

“We were very clearly instructed this season that VAR will not intervene unless it is clearly a clear and obvious error, and that is my opinion.

“Thank God we have found a way to win the game. The team is still very emotionally calm and very composed. That’s a lesson we’ve probably done like we did a few years ago.”
