Alejandro Garnacho was asked about his ordeal after being frozen at Manchester United before sealing off the £40 million switch to Chelsea and appeared in the Blues victory
Alejandro Garnacho said he was being banished as a “bad moment in life” by Reuben Amorim, but refused to involve Manchester United’s boots after an improved performance in Chelsea’s 1-0 victory at Benfica in the Champions League.
Garnacho joined United Academy in 2020 at the age of 16 and entered the senior ranks before quickly becoming a huge hit at Old Trafford. However, his days at the club were counted after losing his favor under Amorim, and he froze along with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia as part of a five-man “bomb team” trained alone in the summer.
The 21-year-old winger eventually moved to Chelsea for £40 million in the transfer window to kickstart his career. It was his cutback that ruined Jose Mourinho’s homecoming with Benfica on Tuesday night.

However, when he was asked about the punitive final days of Manchester United’s career, Garnacho refused to mention Amorim by name, but chose not to assault him. “I think it was a difficult moment there. I’m just training alone,” Garnacho told TNT Sports. “But my old club Manchester United, there’s nothing bad about the club.
“It was a bad moment in life, but now I’m here, playing in this competition and being able to score three points today.”
Garnacho was eased into life in London by Enzo Maresca, given that it disrupted the preseason of Argentine International. He was an unused replacement when he returned to Old Trafford two weeks ago, but endured the Blues’ difficult first start with an overwhelming League Cup victory over Lincoln City, and was booed by rival fans.
However, Garnacho forced his goal to decide on a bright, tight game against Benfica. His contributions meant he was chosen for post-match Maresca admiration, and the blues chief praised his all-around game.
“Alejandro was very good today. Not only in the ball, but also in defensive terms, he was very good in the way he pushed,” the Italian said.
“In the last third he has the freedom to go to one when he decides. It’s important to arrive at the box.
