Arsenal was involved in many controversial decisions with Newcastle United 2-1 win on Monday night, with Jarrred Gillette and Darren England in the spotlight

The Premier League made two important announcements following a series of controversial referee decisions in Arsenal’s thrilling victory over Newcastle United. Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalges’ second half goals secured a comeback after Nick Urtemade’s 34th minute opener.

But before that, some important calls were made. Arsenal was denied a penalty despite referee Jarred Gillett pointing to the place first. Viktor Gyoker attempted to charge Nick Pope to fine-tune the ball, but it appears he was defeated by a Newcastle goalkeeper.

Stockley Park officials suggested an on-field review and the decision was reversed after Gillett spent several minutes watching replays from different angles.

“After the #newars-14’var review, the referee overturned the original decision to penalize to Arsenal, and Premier League Match Center wrote to X. The final decision is a drop ball.”

However, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had a very different perspective on the incident. “I saw it live, I saw it on screen, and for me it was a penalty,” he confessed at a press conference.

“We were very clearly instructed this season that the referees should not intervene unless it’s a clear and obvious error. That’s my opinion. We will find a way to win the game. The team is still very, very, very, very calm and very composed.

In the moment remaining on the clock, Arsenal took a break from the controversial call when a spot kick was not given, despite the ball being connected to Gabriel’s arm, which is quite far from his body.

Clearing why Var Darren Ingland chose not to advise him not to overturn the verdict, Premier League Match Center said:

After being involved in several contested calls, the Premier League appears to support England and Guillett.

According to their official website, the latter oversees var’s responsibility for meeting Leeds United and Tottenham at lunch on Saturday. He then takes a whistle for a wolf home fixture against Brighton the next day.

England will not compete in Premier League matches until Sunday, when he oversees his journey to Brentford in Manchester City. John Brooks has been appointed to umpire for the Gunners clash with West Ham United, with Simon Bennett and Matt Wilkes as his assistants and Chris Kabana as the fourth official.
