Gary Neville walks over Reuben Amorim’s difficult situation at Manchester United and has given his verdict on his decision to play Mason Mount at left-wing back with Brentford
Gary Neville denounced Reuben Amorim’s inexplicable decision to follow along with Mason Mount on the left-wing back. The 26-year-old midfielder was taken to Luke Shaw when Manchester United lost 3-1 to Brentford.
Mount, who took £60 million from Chelsea in July 2023, was injured in Burnley’s thrilling 3-2 victory after opening United’s three Premier League fixtures this season. England International was sidelined for the Manchester Derby before returning from the bench for the replacement in a dramatic 2-1 victory over Chelsea.
Mount was featured again over the weekend, but he was unable to save Amorim’s struggling side points. Shortly after his introduction, Matthias Jensen dealt the killer’s blow with the third decisive goal, following a lightning counterattack.

Speaking about the Gary Neville podcast held at St. James Park on Sunday evening, Neville analyzed the disappointing results at G-Tech Community Stadium. United Legend has branded the choice to roll out the mount “absolutely ridiculous” on the left-wing back once again.
“In that game, there was something that I mentioned on a podcast a few weeks ago. “I said Mason Mount had reached left wing back.
“You’re stuck with your plan, and you can have your coach having an idea and he can provide it and not turn the idea over with the player.
“But then, when he put Mason Mount on the left field back, he was once again left field back at Brentford in the final five minutes of the game. It starts to look terrible.”
Neville added:
“I struggled to see him in his natural position at times, but actually putting him there on the left is ridiculous. It’s absolutely ridiculous.”
Regarding the situation at United, Neville said (via Manchester Evening News):
“Chelsea’s victory isn’t very aggressive. It’s just football. Last Saturday, I thought “Brent Ford Way, I think there’s a real opportunity for Sunderland to score nine points on the board next week.
“But Brentford’s game was a really poor performance and I was really worried. Through instinct, I saw it on TV, and saw the player’s face and body language, and I felt for the first time that the player’s elements might really be a system and what’s going on.”
