The Reds missed Palace skipper Guehi’s £35 million contract on the day of their transfer deadline after the Eagles were unable to take a replacement. And it is expected that the Premier League champion will move when he becomes free agent next summer due to the England defender’s contract.

“We have not had five or six injuries at the same time throughout the season, and if that’s the case, we’ll be 15/16 players and it’s usually going to be difficult.
“So that’s a choice I like to make, but I think that as a club it’s also an economic choice. If you want to keep these top players, you can’t have a player 24/7.
“We know there’s a lot to be said about our team, but if people start to see it the way they should, they’ll say there are players who have other teams we compete in, 24/7.
“But that’s the choice we choose because we believe that every player needs to have a perspective on development and playing time. If you have to disappoint four or five players, then we believe that isn’t the right energy you want to have in the building.
“On the other hand, that means that if you get one injury, you don’t have two players in every position anymore, as there are no more two alternatives. That’s a risk you’ll take, but it can try and bring in generic players like Florian Wiltz who can play so we can play as eight people, or play any position.
“That’s how we do it and that’s why we can spend a little more on one player rather than bringing in three, and that might be the difference between the clubs.”
