The UN Committee on Advisory Committee called on UEFA to halt Israel after the UN Committee on Inquiry determined that it was committing genocide in Gaza.
UEFA and FIFA are on a conflict course over a decision to ban Israel from the next World Cup in North America. The UEFA Executive Committee will meet next week to decide whether to suspend Israel. Most members are understood to be in favor of the ban.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is also calling for sports sanctions against Israel. However, with World Cup qualifiers under FIFA’s jurisdiction, the world governing body of football will have the power to reverse Israel’s ban from UEFA.
Israel, currently third in Group I, has two qualifiers remaining, and could potentially secure a place at the World Cup. Ran Ben Simon’s side is tied to second place Italy and points. Group winners will automatically qualify, and second place will secure play.

The ban from UEFA would put FIFA President Gianni Infantino in a troublesome position, but taking into account the close ties between the United States and its President Donald Trump.
The US government argues that if there is a qualifier, it will try to stop the Israeli ban, where Israel competes, next summer. Although Infantino said last week it would be difficult to sanction countries involved in the conflict.
A US State Department spokesperson said, “We will absolutely strive to stop any effort to ban Israeli national soccer teams from the World Cup.”
If UEFA votes to abandon Israel from European competitions at both the international and club levels, Aston Villa’s clash with the Europa League will be cancelled with Maccabi Haifi.
Russia has been banned from European competition since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has banned Russian athletes from competing under the national flag at the 2024 Olympics held in Paris.
