To put it simply, Manchester United is creating a significant amount of opportunity. They don’t just take them at a very surprising rate for a big club.
No player can make this better than club captain Bruno Fernandez. For Fernandez this season, let’s take a look at some more statistics this time. There are some scoring/creative statistics and where he ranks for them both in Manchester United and the Premier League.
The Red Devils have worked so hard to revamp their offensive units, but they can’t escape their dependence on Bruno. “Brunolodepencia” if it is. He is very important to them. He is still one of the best, if not the best in the Premier League.
What’s interesting about Fernandez this season is where he plays. Last season he played more as one of the 10th place (though not exclusive) in manager Reuben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, but played fully this season as one of two deep midfielders.
This is obviously about allowing Amorim to fit all his attackers into the team, but there has been debate in the past that Fernandez might thrive if he is allowed to look at the entire pitch.

The numbers suggest that he is actually thriving. Despite playing deep, Fernandez compares both his shots and creative actions to United and other Premier League players.
However, due to United’s complicated outcome, some have wondered whether he needs to get the pitch back higher. After all, this is a player who scored 64 goals in the Premier League despite being a midfielder. He has the unusual ability to find the back of the net.
“When I started my career, I was 10th and after understanding the game better, I was later returned to that sixth. In that role, I read the game and anticipate what’s going on right in front of my eyes.
“It’s also important to have good communication with the backline, which is different quality compared to thinking about the media, moving to half the space and playing as No. 10, linking with forward players.
“There are also risk and reward factors, because when you play at a higher position, you can take more risks with the type of passes you play.
“I played as No. 10 and when someone was running down my shoulder, I knew my teammates had retreated me to cover me, but before you knew it, you were drawn to the ball, you missed your runner, you missed your runner, you knew the ball was behind the net.”
Williams is one of the greatest creative players England has ever produced, and she feels that Fernandez should return to a higher level. But the numbers probably make another argument. Fernandez plays so well that it can be so recoiling that he can’t get rid of the deep role.
Manchester United spent a lot of money this summer to bolster their offense. Brian Mbemo, Mash Cunya and Benjamin Sesco are not just forgetting how to score goals. At least one of them will probably get better. The numbers tell us what Fernandez and the other teams are creating.
In this way, according to a friend of Opta, only one player who has fallen below the expected assists in the Premier League worse than Fernandez this season is Mbeumo. And with each FBREF, Manchester United have done 145 shot-making actions so far this season. This is 19 years old than Liverpool, the most in the Premier League and the next best team.

Clearly, the numbers suggest that the patterns Amorim’s system is trying to create are largely working. If everything clicks there are indications that this could be a very powerful attack. It’s probably not perfect, but it certainly is better than the 11th Premier League. However, it is understandable that after everything that has happened over the past few years, fans are already pressing the panic button. They had been hurt before.
But nonetheless, United and Amorim must resist the moving Fernandez. They must be patient and trust what they have done. If their forwards can start cleaning up more opportunities, then suddenly Amorim has a way to keep their teams with a combination of Mbeumo, Cunya, Cesco and Amado Dialo.
Perhaps later in the season, this is something to see if these trends will continue, but for now it feels like Amorim has to trust his scorer to turn this around.
