Philfoden endured a difficult season in 2024-25, but has launched a new campaign back to his best to play a major role in England at the World Cup next summer

For Phil Foden, the end of last season was a dark time. Four months ago, after a long campaign where he hadn’t hit the height of the previous season, he asked the free agency to remove him from the English team.

Decades later, some superstars made it their mission to skip England coming together. But Foden’s reason was real and even more troublesome. He was in a dark place.

“It was a frustrating season for me,” he said, “I was mentally going a lot out of the pitch. That’s one of them.

In 2021, the Manchester City star’s best friend and advisor Richard Green passed away. It left Foden in ruins and it took him a little time for him to accept his death.

Of course, everything looked good when he appeared on the city’s fourth title, Triumph, in the 2023-24 campaign, and won the PFA Player of the Year Award. But behind the Euro 2024, when he didn’t hit the height he probably expected, Foden began his 20-league match last season.

He also suffered from two illnesses in December, including bronchitis, and overcomes the pain of persistent ankle problems. By the end of the campaign he looked like someone caught up in life.

But the summer off finding himself again saw Foden return to what he was best.

That’s why many millions of Pep Guardiola have spent new signatures between the last two transfer windows.

Guardiola returned Foden to the lineup to the term, taking his patient time to the 25-year-old. He was properly rewarded.

In the first start of the new season, Foden scored the opening goal in his derby victory at United at Etihad. He then produced a very sublime pass and set up the first goal of Erling Haaland’s two goals. It could work well as an assist in the season.

City’s 47 scored another goal in his Carabao Cup victory at Huddersfield this week. He once again seemed confident, dismantling his opponents with a great selection of passes, and flashing free kicks just wide.

Looking out, it appears he’s reverting Mojo. This is a huge boost for England boss Thomas Touchel ahead of next summer’s World Cup. And it left Guardiola, who knows how important he is to City’s trophy hopes.

“We need him so much this season,” Guardiola said. “We enjoy happiness in his face.”

Kevin de Bruin’s departure to Naples definitely left a blank in the city. Even in his final season, his powers may have probably not been what they once were, but he was still the creator of the club. For some, he is a blank Guardiola can never fulfill.

But Fit and Foden of firing will see Miss de Bruin in the city, far less than the club initially feared. Guardiola needs Foden – and so does England ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

That happiness may return to his face and it could be a special season for a truly special footballer.
