Hugo Ekichike faces financial punishment after being sent to Liverpool after scoring with Southampton in the third round of the League Cup tie against Southampton

Reports say Liverpool is likely to punish two weeks of wages after being sent to Southampton. The striker received his second yellow card to take off his shirt, celebrating the second half winner.

Ekitike’s first booking was a dissent after he dumped the ball in response to being punished by referee Thomas Brammall. It came just 10 minutes later, at a halftime alternative, after the French International opened a score at Anfield just before the break, in place of Alexander Isaac.

The latter will now appear side-by-side to start the Reds’ first Premier League match this weekend. Ekitique will ban one match while the team plays Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

That punishment is the only punishment currently being imposed on players, but it appears that further financial sanctions are coming soon. Daily Mail reports that Liverpool is likely to sign a two-week wage.

Germany’s SkySports reported that Ekitique will earn around 15-16 million euros a year this summer. This works at a weekly wage of around £250,000.

Arne Slot was not impressed by the player’s inexplicable statistics at all. The head coach gave a scathing verdict at a post-game press conference.

“The first (yellow card) was already unnecessary and to some degree stupid because you have to control your emotions,” Slot said. “If you’re playing in the Premier League and you’re nine, you know how difficult it is.

“The defender can do almost everything he wants, and if you push him a little, you can get a free kick against you. But it’s always best to control your emotions.

“So when I got the red card against Everton, I think I always said it was stupid because I can show you your feelings. But if it leads to yellow or red, it’s to some degree stupid.

“I then told him that if he scores in the Champions League final 87 minutes after beating three players and hitting the top corner, he can understand that he’s saying, ‘That’s all I do.’

“I’m old-fashioned, I’m 47, I’m old, I’m old, I’m not playing at this level. But I’ve scored a few goals. And if I had scored a goal like this, I would have wandered around towards Federico Chiesa and said, ‘This goal is about you, this isn’t about me.’

“So, yeah, I’m not smart, I’m not smart. You call it stupid, I call it stupid.”
