Manchester United and the English legend talks about his relationship with alcohol and the length he went to hide his drinking from Sir Alex Ferguson
Wayne Rooney lifted his alcoholic lid – and admitted that without the help of his wife Colleen, he could have died. Rooney is considered one of the great players of his generation following his incredible career at England and Manchester United.
The former striker was United’s biggest scorer in history and led the England charts until Harry Kane was overtaken. However, Rooney, who appeared on “Rio Ferdinand is a Podcast,” revealed how he faced a constant battle with booze.
Rooney admits he went to such lengths to hide his drinking from Ir Alex Ferguson, and admits that he looked down and chewed gum before heading for training.

Rooney said: “I wanted to go out and spend the night with friends. Of course, it went where I had gone too far. It was a moment in my life where I was very struggling.
“I really didn’t want to do it because I didn’t want to put that strain on anyone. I remember going out to workout and dropping my eyes and chewing gum.
“I just drank for two days. I’ll go to workout, score two goals over the weekend, then I’ll go back and go straight for two days for drinks.”
Rooney believes Colleen saved his life, saying, “Coleen is huge. We are Crocs’ two children, and then we grew up together, obviously we started dating and got married, we got married and had children.
“You know, I loved soccer. I was obsessed with soccer, but I loved everything about going out and going out at night. She saw it very early on, and she controlled it.
“And sometimes you say, ‘What are you doing? Why are you saying you don’t or don’t? I believe I’d be dead if she wasn’t there. I believe it.
“I’ve made mistakes in the past, and it’s well documented, but sometimes I’m a little different. She keeps me on that path. She’s done it for 20 years.”
