Liverpool was again delayed on a mixed fateful night as they defeated Southampton with 10 men to move into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Instead of halftime, Hugo Ekitike scored his fifth goal with a red shirt since joining the summer, and took off his shirt and received the red card while celebrating. That was already after receiving the booking in dispute. However, the Reds secured a spot in a 2-1 win at Anfield, Wednesday night’s draw.
Alexander Isaac had previously scored Liverpool’s first goal before halftime, but in the 76th minute his opener was cancelled by Shea Charles. Just as hopes for Southampton’s cup upset had risen, Ekitique tapped from the Fedelico Chiesa Square Ball in just four minutes to play. Arne Slot added a disappointment when debutant Giovanni Leoni stretched out with a knee injury, and stretched out with a knee injury the Premier League champion feared. Liverpool Player Rating vs Southampton
Giorgi Mamardashvili -7
When the striker hit the bar, he rejected Adam Armstrong early, closing the angle and closing the angle. Handled the cross well and was disappointed by his defense for the goal.
Jeremie Frimpong -5
The unstable first half of the game he struggled with the ball. Connor Bradley came in and the second half was more calm, but still moved to a midfielder that wasn’t his best night.
Giovanni Leoni-7
His encouraging debut ended with a potential disaster as he grew out of the tunnel of suffering. Before that, he would have been composed much more than Joe Gomez on a confident display. Thanks to the Italians covered by Southampton attackers, they helped Leo Sienta deny to an open goal as Southampton attackers headed for the entire rebound. Liverpool will hope that his injury is not serious.
Joe Gomez-4
Bad with the ball. Multiple first half chances and gave it on charges of poor long distance passing. The first 20 minutes of the second half improved, then sloppy again. It was his selfish pass that led to the horn where the saint scored. A great late tackle when Charles threatened to score at the time of injury.
Andy Robertson-6
Captaining Liverpool at night, he provided the kind of sturdy player that his experience should be defensive. When Ekitique scored, a gorgeous long ball set Chiesa scored the goal.
Wataru End-5
Usually, I used the ball more often by snapping to tackle with opposing players. But it was his miserable header that then led to Southampton’s equalizer from the corner that he should have easily cleared.
Curtis Jones-6
Stable performance. He set up a one-minute ISAK chance, floating across the pitch and picking up the ball regularly, leaving Liverpool behind on the attack.
Federico Chiesa -8
The kind of performance he needed. He was defensively and consistently threatening in the final third. A good save from McCarthy forced a low shot and brilliant and great to find Isaac for his goal back to the ball. He should have been assisting when Ekitike turned big – then he confirmed that the Frenchman couldn’t miss a bit later with excellent runs and sideway passes for the winner.
Trey Nyoni -5
They really couldn’t get into the game and rarely picked up the ball in dangerous areas. Perhaps you need more senior football at this level – perhaps a January championship loan?
Rio ngumoha -6
A game where cross reinserts with Chiesa’s shot, always with one good drive and one cross in the first half. But a very raw overall display from an exciting teenager. It was often decorated in Elias Zelato.
Alexander Isaac-7
The thing that saved the shot in the first minute was that he was supposed to score, so he should have been lacking sharpness in other moments. I was given a second chance before halftime and revised with a smart finish. After a warm-down on the pitch, he lowered the bottom at halftime.
Alternatives
Hugo Ekitike (ISAK 46)-6
It looked very sharp with some beautiful touches. After a big walk from Chiesa Cross, I slammed an empty net from an Italian square ball. However, he took off his shirt and left, celebrating – he looked forgotten by yellow. Mark is defeated due to the fact that he is now facing an incredible stop.
Connor Bradley (Jones 57)-6
He regularly moved forward from his right-back role. Left Shea Charles to the left for the Southampton equalizer.
Jaden Duns (numaha 74)-6
His first team appearance since January. Some nice close control to keep the ball in one stop time moment.
Milos Kerquez (Leoni 81)-6
They defended very well when Liverpool fell to 10.
