Manchester United held up to beat Chelsea at Old Trafford after both sides were reduced to 10, but Luke Shaw admits that the Red Devils were worried about the second half
Everything about where Manchester United is now was the top feelings they had in the dressing room after this fierce battle victory.
On a night that was led to filthy rain at Old Trafford, reduced to 10 men on either side, United clinging to a thin lead, and ultimately managed to get over the line.
Reuben Amorim’s team struggled this season, but in the first half they produced the best form of his disrupted 10-month reign.
However, there are enough pluses for Amorim and his players to work on this important victory and build on the upcoming game, suggesting that this is an important turning point for their season.

United defender Luke Shaw then summed up his mood when he said it.
“We weren’t aggressive, not aggressive, but I think that’s where we are at the moment. But we knew how important it was to win the game – it’s very important.
“That’s the mentality we’re in. It was about protecting for our lives and making sure we won this game. Of course there are things we can improve. But we have to be very pleased with three points.
“It was really important to start well, start fast and bring in the crowd, especially after the disappointing results last weekend. It was essential to get started right away, and we did that.
“There are a lot of things we’ve done well, not just today, but we’re thinking about this whole season. We keep pushing and working hard in training, things have to evolve.”
An early fire for Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez’s early sacking Brian Mbemo allowed United to compete for a two-goal lead, but Casemiro’s red card and Trevor Charova’s late goals guaranteed a nervous finale for the hosts.
However, at this stage, confidence among Amorim players was still fragile and, as Shaw later admitted, it was important to win by some means.
“The outcome is the most important thing,” Shaw said. “The results bring happiness and confidence, especially around the dressing room and training grounds.
“We’ve won this game this week and moved on to the next game. I think the standard we have to set is how we did it in the first half.
“It’s about maintaining a level consistently, not just 30 or 45 minutes. If you want to be the top of the league and be the top of the top team, you need to get it. You need to be consistent throughout the game.
“Today we felt we were going to win. That’s how we have to feel all the games. We have to feel we’re going to get into the games and win.
