Reuben Amorim has been in charge of Manchester United for almost a year, but the club’s board has linked two administrative appointments in the wake of a disastrous start to a new season.
Reuben Amorim is under pressure at Manchester United, but has been denied that two potential alternatives for head coaches are being considered. It has been proposed that club legend Michael Carrick is ringing out as a possible short-term alternative to Amorim in the case of mid-season shakeups.
Also, Jose Mourinho’s whispers could return to the northwest before being appointed at Benfica this week. Amorim has not been able to make many marks since his arrival at Old Trafford last November.
The 15th place finish in the Premier League last season may have been a major source of concern, but the 40-year-old was excused as a result of working with a team he mostly inherited from Eric Ten Hag.

But after spending his days big this summer, he will not be legitimized for his poor performance this season, Manchester Evening News reports. The Portuguese tactician spent more than £200 million on Matthews Cunha, Brian Mbemo, Benjamin Cesco and Senne Ranmens, hoping to fine-tune his patented 3-4-3 formation and pace of tough plays.
However, the new acquisition does not seem to offer a poor form of relief given that Amorim not only manages one victory from his opening four fixtures, but also manages an embarrassing exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Grimsbytown, who plays in League Two.
Many fans of the Red Devils are tired of the struggle on their part given how prolific they were during the tenure with Irish Alex Ferguson legendary trophy, but the board has yet to give up on head coaching. That’s despite rumours that the club has been showing interest in other managers recently.
It was suggested that Carrick was contacted about the possibility that he would have to replace Amorim in the event of a mid-season layoff, but other rumors claimed that Mourinho was also considered for his return to Old Trafford. However, according to Talksport, club insiders have firmly rejected these two proposals.
Carrick, who gained the caretaker manager following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskier in 2021, later spent three years at Middlesbrough in the Championship. He hasn’t been working since June after being let go in the rag following a disappointing 10th place finish in the league.
Meanwhile, Mourinho was responsible for United from May 2016 to December 2018, winning League Cup, Community Shield and Europa League titles during that time. Since leaving Old Trafford, he has had stints with the Spurs, Roma and Fenerbafe, and was appointed Benfica’s new head coach after Bruno Reige was fired.
Despite United’s dressing room, which primarily supports Amorim, Talksport reportedly has raised concerns about a team’s decline in performance in league and cup competitions this season.
This level of self-criticism within United Camp may be a breath of fresh air for many fans.
United are preparing to return to Premier League action on Saturday. They welcome undefeated Chelsea to Old Trafford. The challenging match between Liverpool and Brighton could also be a particularly tough fall for Amorim on the horizon in the next five games.
