Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca delved into Manchester United in a subtle way ahead of the Premier League clash. The Blues travelled to Old Trafford on Saturday night, aiming to bounce back from his disappointment in the Champions League.

Chelsea were taking European action as they played against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night. The unique goal from Trevoh Chalobah and Harry Kane Brace came out with Bayern as Cole Palmer and 3-1 winners on the Chelsea scoresheet.

Maresca’s men were acting mid-week, but this season’s lack of European football at Old Trafford means that Reuben Amorim’s team has spent extra time recovering from the team’s knock in preparation for a game against Chelsea. It could be seen as an advantage of participating in weekend games.

When asked about the situation at a pre-match press conference, Maresca appeared to be delving into United. “When you ask me, I prefer to play Champions League games, no doubt,” he said.

“But at the same time, the reality is that they have one week to prepare the game, and we played the game two days ago, 48 hours ago.

One person who appears to fully agree with the Chelsea boss about wanting to see his team in Champions League action is co-owner Ir Jim Ratcliffe. Talksport claims that in a meeting with Amorim this week, Ratcliffe emphasized that it needs to improve its results on the field.

The co-owner adds that he believes the current team is enough to challenge the top five finish this season. The Champions League is not said to be an essential purpose by the end of the season, but the Champions League is considered essential by the United Chiefs, just as Ratcliffe wants to return United to the European elite.

Eligibility for European football in all forms is considered the minimum that Amorim should gain, or he could face serious consequences.

The lack of European football this season will be a major economic blow for United. Given the huge transfer costs in the summer, it is likely that he will be expected to return to the European stage this time next season.

The team is currently sitting in 14th place at the Premier League table. Last weekend’s 3-0 loss to rivals Man City built up pressure on Amorim.

At a pre-match press conference, Amorim outlined what he was told at this week’s meeting with Ratcliffe. “New contract, he was offering me a new contract,” he said with a smile.

“No, it’s normal, just to show support, to explain it as a long project. He’s said many times, “This is my third season.” That’s not the case for me.

“I talked to him and (CEO) Omar (Berada) and (Football Director) Jason (Wilcox), and we’re trying to see all the data around the team, so we had a regular meeting.
