Pep Guardiola threw weight behind Ehring Haaland, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo, shattering the Champions League scoring record after the Norwegian sensation became the fastest player to score 50 goals in the competition. Haaland scored Manchester City’s first goal against Napoli, reaching this milestone in just 49 appearances and broke Rude van Nistelloi’s record in 13 games.
The 25-year-old is currently comparable to Thierry Henry in ninth place with a Champions League goal, but he still ousts Lionel Messi in ’79 by Cristiano Ronaldo by ’90. However, Guarand is confident that if Haaland continues to perform at his current level in Etihad, he can represent these records. His goal in a 2-0 Champions League victory over the Serie A Champions led Talley to six goals in five games this season.
“In that rhythm, yes (he can break the record),” asserted the city boss. “He’s not injured, he can play for another 10 or 12 years and if he absolutely maintains this progression, what can I say? The numbers speak for myself.
“We are lucky to have him, to congratulate him.
Guardiola also believes Haaland has bolstered his game this season. He has been added to City’s four leadership group, thriving about leadership responsibilities and benefits from his greater experience. “It’s a matter of doing a lot, gaining experience, getting involved in more important games and his mentality,” concluded Guardiola.
Haaland’s goal was set spectacularly by Phil Foden, who provided a sublime assist with the delicate touch of his left boot. Guardiola is excited to see his star player return to form after overcoming injuries and off-field problems last season.
“You can’t imagine it before you miss Phil,” he said. “The last two games were Phil, as we know it.
“When he played near Erling two years ago, Phil was the best player in the Premier League. He’s dangerous near the box. We’re so happy because we know he’s happy and his life is fine, the rest is natural.”
