Cole Palmer accused Chelsea of not handling the big moments. The Blues, who returned to the competition for the first time since 2023, was beaten 3-1 by Bayer Munich.
Enzo Maresca’s team was disappointed at the Allianz Arena. Trevo Charova’s unfortunate unique goal and Harry Kane’s double sealed a double victory for the German giants.
Chelsea’s Starman Palmer netted the team’s lonely strike during the opening period and closed the smooth move by swapping passes with Malogsto before passing Manuel Neuer. However, Palmer’s efforts – a second effort in four days following Saturday’s goal with Brentford 2-2, proved inadequate to change the final outcome.
After the match, Palmer identified exactly where things were unraveled for the Blues in his candid post-match discussion. The England ace emphasized his team’s focus and his inability to effectively handle key passages in play.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Palmer said:

“I was lacking in focus and didn’t properly manage the moment.
“We showed we can play against one of the best teams in the competition, and to be honest, the manager told us before going to the toes.
“It’s a good learning curve and it’s good to go back to competition. I don’t know (what happened in the second half). We’re not on the learning curve here. We’ve shown we want to compete.”
Palmer was in the Blues’ top form, where he got the net a second later in the game and fine-tuned the ball that passed Neuer after a cracking pass from Andrei Santos, but Val choked it for offside early in the play.
He was a light that glowed in various performances of the Blues. He played complicated passing football and sometimes looked majestic, but he didn’t give much to worry about.
Giving his verdict on Chelsea’s overall performance, Maresca said after the match, “I think the overall performance was very good. We started out very well for 20 minutes and created a chance.
“When we acknowledge our goals, we can avoid those goals. We got into the game and scored.”
Chelsea will face Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday. Bruce then heads to Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup, then heads home to Brighton.
