Former Barcelona defender Eric Avidal, who died of complications from a previous liver transplant following rumors on social media over the weekend.
Former Barcelona and French defender Eric Abydal have been forced to shut down social media rumors claiming he had passed away over the weekend.
Avidal, 46, was diagnosed with liver cancer around the time he was in Barcelona in 2011, but the tumor was removed the same year. He then returned to playing for Barcelona a year later after being forced to undergo a liver transplant in 2012. He also played for Monaco, Lille, Lyon and Olympiacos, and represented his country 67 times at the senior level in his outstanding career.
A weekend rumour that spread across social media claimed that Avidal died in 2012 due to complications from a liver transplant he suffered.

“Rumours should never exist,” the former player wrote on his Instagram account. “I’m here with my family, but everything’s fine. Respect is essential. My family and my kids are behind this.
“To be clear, I’m fine, I’m fine and I’m fine. I appreciate your support and message of concern. Let’s focus on what really matters.”
The Abidal update was filled with extensive relief and well wishes, including football fans, including fans from Barcelona, where Abidal was the sports director between 2018 and 2020, after he drove his boots. In total, Abhidal won 15 trophies at Nu Camp.
After returning to France for his second stint with Monaco, Abydal finished his playing career in Greece with the book by Olympiacos. After playing a similar role in Barcelona after resignation, Abhidal is currently the sports director of Alwasl Sports Club in the United Arab Emirates.
