Everach Eze’s arrival at Arsenal from Crystal Palace met universal excitement from the club’s fan base. It’s not just because the gunner landed Tottenham in Gazam.

Eze has been one of the most exciting players in the Premier League in the past few seasons, bringing together impressive highlight reels at the Palace with his skill set and fun playing style. Given the keys on the palace side, he drifted all over the pitch, causing headaches to the enemy.

His rise made him an England regular and won a £67.5 million transfer to Arsenal. There is little question that he could step up and that Arsenal paid for but there was a flash.

However, his Champions League debut with the Athletic Club on Tuesday night saw the 27-year-old’s reality part-time job. Arsenal won a 2-0 victory in the Basque Country, but had nothing to do with Eze, who was isolated and ineffective on the left.

The victory was provided by Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Torosad. Mikel Arteta then welcomed his “finisher” with a message that could raise Eze’s alarm bell. At the palace, he was an uncontroversial top dog, but he now faces much more intense competition in the place. “Incredibly, both him (Martinelli) and Leo. They have very different qualities than EBS and Victor,” Arteta said.

Eze was generally given a license to play as a free No. 10 on Palace and create a place he thought was appropriate. However, this structure is much more stringent at Arsenal under Arteta, especially at Champions League away days. A companion’s new arrival, Noni Maduke, continued to shine the wings on the other side, but Eze had little effect.

Steve McManaman gave a dull review of his performance at TNT Sports.

“He knows the level of the game has to jump right now. You’re playing Big Boy’s football against the best team in the Champions League. If you want to compete, you have to be better and you have to be faster than he showed tonight.”

But Eze may have another idea that spins around his mind: I want Arteta to play me in my natural position.

With Eze on his right foot, naturally drifting from the left flank inside, and with Riccardo Carafioli behind him on his left back, Arsenal’s overlap, which has been a continuous switch of Madueke’s play on the right side, is not an option.

Arteta supports a 4-3-3 formation that is not optimal for Eze, who may have been paying attention to Mikel Merino’s role in jealous. With Martin Odegaard gone missing, it was Merino who was Eze’s advanced midfield position for the captain, but former Arsenal defender Martin Keene thinks it should change on Sunday.

Looking for a Start XI to face Manchester City, Keon said, “There’s a chance Eze can play as a midfielder… I’ll start with Martinelli on the left and put Eze in the midfield.

“He (Arteta) has the option when he wasn’t in the practice last season. He had no options so he managed to tie one arm behind his back. Now he has to find the right balance to beat Man City.”

It seems unlikely that Arteta will make such a big tactical decision for a match that could define the season. He was not a gambler, employing the militant and safer midfield trio of Merino, Declan Rice and Martins Vimendi at Anfield on August 31st.

Perhaps Eze must learn to adapt and thrive on her left flank. However, he managed to find himself on the bench. His role has returned in the near future as one of Atteta’s “finishers” and Odegaard and Bukayo Saka were injured and strengthened the competition even more.

It’s a good problem for Arteta and the challenge is definitely something you’ll get to experience.
