Arsenal embarks on another Champions League effort after losing in the semi-finals with Michael Arteta, who wanted to change history in Europe in the semi-finals last season, but he understands reality
Mikel Arteta has admitted that Arsenal will “fail more than they can succeed” in their efforts to win the first-ever Champions League, which is preparing to launch a campaign in Spain. The semi-finalists last season will face Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday night.
Gunner finished his spell from the top European competition a few years ago, moving on to the semi-finals, in which he was trying to conquer Europe in the end, and then to the semi-finals. Arteta’s trophy drought dates back to the FA Cup, which he won in 2020, and is increasing pressure for him to deliver.
Arsenal showed that last semester could be mixed with the best teams in Europe, knocking out the Real Madrid home to the final eight. But the nature of the competition means that only European heavyweights can win – something Arteta was eager to emphasize.

He said: “Big clubs (winning), they’ll try 7, 8, 9 times and maybe they’ll win with two people. So in this competition you’ll be a lot more failing than you did.
Arteta has been short in the Premier League for the past three years, finishing second on each occasion. He also had to dig through some semi-final losses and bring back the investments made with his team. The Champions League is one of the best opportunities to do that.
Real Madrid remained the most successful side of the competition, winning 15 times and losing just three finals. Liverpool is England’s most successful outfit, most recently winning six times in 2019. Manchester United, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Manchester City could also call themselves European champions.
Arsenal’s best efforts were his final appearance in his 2006 loss to Barcelona. They also made three semi-finals in 23 appearances in Europe’s top competition with Arteta, who is confessing the tournament, but are determined to rewrite their own history.
“Well, it’s our long history and we haven’t won yet, so it tells us how difficult it is,” he said. “That’s how I see it, but pressure is an opportunity to drive that energy and a willingness to get better every day. Every decision should give you the best chance to try it along with its standards and those expectations.”
Arsenal’s heavyweight conflicts occur when hosting Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich. They will also need to travel to last year’s finalist, Inter Milan.
Playoff Celtic conquerors Olympiacos, Club Bruges, Slavia Prague and FC Kairat are the other enemies of the gunners.
