Liverpool won again in death after Mohamed Sarah sent a penalty in the suspension time to give the Reds a 1-0 victory over 10 Burnleys. The inactive side of Arne Slot was suffocated by the almost entire tenacious host, after Hannibal Mejbri had processed the ball and before he was awarded a spot kick.
Liverpool appeared in Turf Moor without Alexander Isaac. Swedish International was left to the match-day team as they were trying to build fitness after their move from Newcastle. And the visitors showed some early promises when they tried to rule. Burnley grew into the match and refused to let Liverpool’s offense wreaked havoc, but Sarah closed out three points on his side with the virtually final kick of the match. Express Sports is on hand with ratings from all Liverpool players.
Liverpool player rating vs Burnley
Allison: 7
Liverpool’s defense was held firmly against the cautious Burnley side, which was rarely bothered.
Dominik Szoboszlai: 8
When Connor Bradley came in on a break, he was pushed back again into the right back, then into the middle. Sometimes he showed off his sweet right foot and tried to take part in the attack. I made a decent effort at the goal just before the time mark.
Ibrahima Conate: 6
When Liverpool needed a rhythm, they’re defensively strong on the ball, but slow. 12 minutes after the match, followed by Liverpool’s corner, and headed the ball from a point blank range onto the crossbar.
Virgil Van Dijk: 8
Burnley was given the first chance of the match and handed the ball early on. However, he was generally the rock behind him, so that he could get his header and keep Burnley’s attackers at bay.
Milos Karques: 6
It started before Andy Robertson, but was booked for diving and replaced by Scotland before halftime.
Alexis Mac Allister: 6
It was fortunate that he escaped serious injuries after a challenge from Leslie Ugochukwu in the first half as the Burnley midfielder was warned before being fired towards the end of the match. The 2022 World Cup winner left at halftime.
Lian Grain Bellch: 9
Liverpool’s best player. He tried to get on the ball over and over again, trying to push his team forward. He showed off his incredible talent and at one point he slammed the ball over Lyle Foster’s head.
Mohamed Sarah: 5
They were passengers for most of the game. And Slot may be worried by the start of his season. The winger struggles to hit his normal height. It was under 4/10 until he was fired on a winning goal.
Florian Wirtz: 5
After a calm start to his Anfield career, he was under pressure to offer a big performance. However, Liverpool fans were once again overwhelmed despite improved second half. He must show Liverpool the form he persuaded to fire up to £116 million to sign him.
Cody Gakpo: 4
Liverpool struggled to carve out clear opportunities, so they kept cutting inside while running with Kyle Walker, and were too predictable with the ball.
Hugo Ekitike: 6
He was quarantined up front as his offensive teammates struggled to create opportunities for him. After showing his skills on the ball, he put a broad effort on the post just before the break and was eventually replaced.
Alternatives
Andy Robertson: 7
He tried to inspire visitors into life, and after coming it exploded into the penalty area of Burnley.
Connor Bradley: 6
He came at halftime and after returning from his injury, he would be disappointed that he didn’t give him the start when he was named Jeremin Hulipon, who was named on the bench.
Federico Chiesa: 6
Visitors desperately chased the goal, but had little impact, so we came to Hugo Ekichique with 18 minutes left.
Jeremie Frimpong: 6
He was brought in with three minutes remaining, making it back to action for the first time since the opening night of the season.
Rio ngumoha: 6
We introduced the action at the same time as Frimpong. We really didn’t get a chance to recreate his final winner from the Newcastle game.
