Owen Hargreaves was signed to Manchester United by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2007, but the legendary Red Devils manager left him in a particularly uncomfortable position during his private chat
Sir Alex Ferguson felt anxious when he left Owen Hargreaves and offered to make him a cup of tea. Former England International Hargreaves was signed by Ferguson for Manchester United in July 2007 on a £17 million contract from Bayern Munich.
Speaking about that Peter Crouch podcast, Hargreaves recalled that Gary Neville was the first to beat the news that Ferguson wanted to sign him. “So I remember Gary was the first person to call me after the World Cup. He was like, ‘The boss wants to sign you, do you want to come to Man United?” I was like, ‘Yeah, if we can make it work,'” he said.
When asked about his conversation with Ferguson, he added:

“I remember him saying, ‘Oh, do you want to drink some tea?” and I remember thinking, ‘I can’t let him make me a cup of tea, that’s rude.’ So I liked to get into the mix, but I didn’t want to drive him away either.
“It was cool that he recognized you as a player and wanted you to be involved… I remember him telling me.
Given the impressive record for the nine Premier League titles, five FA Cups, two League Cups and the Champions League trophy with the Red Devils prior to the arrival of Hargreaves, it is clear that the 44-year-old, now rated Ferguson highly before joining Manchester United.
Hargreaves played a key role in his debut season at Old Trafford in United’s Premier League victory, making 23 appearances in the English top flights, three in the FA Cup and eight in the Champions League.
However, the rest of his time in the Northwest was full of difficulties. From 2008 to 2011, Hargreaves was able to play four more games for Manchester United due to a series of injuries, and he eventually joined Crosstown rival Manchester City.
Knee troubles kept him out of action for 573 days between 2008 and 2010, but thigh issues in 2010/11 made him miss another 148 days. After signing a one-year contract, he made only four appearances for the club before his release in 2012, despite high expectations of a stint with the Citizens.
And City won the Premier League title that season, but Hargreaves left without a winner’s medal due to insufficient match times. Meanwhile, Ferguson continued to manage Manchester United until 2013, when David Moys took over.
Since then, despite many top managers including Jose Mourinho and Louis Van Gaal, no one has been able to recreate the golden age that legendary Scott was a prime side during his 27-year tenure. Reuben Amorim is the newest manager at Old Trafford.
He intervened after Eric Tuten Hug was fired last November following a series of disappointing performances at the start of the third season. Amorim was only able to enroll United in 15th place at the Premier League table last season, not his own work, but after receiving full support from the board this summer, he hopes for a better fate this time.
The 40-year-old brings in several new faces, including Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, and hopes to be able to provide the goalscore prowess that his team lacked last season. But with one win, one draw and one loss from the first three matches, Amorim looks for more consistency when United return to Premier League action to face City in the Manchester Derby.
