Former Premier League goalkeeper Russell Holt is undergoing palliative care after being diagnosed with two terminal illnesses.

The 52-year-old Hoult played for Leicester, Derby, Notts County, Portsmouth and West Brom during his long and successful career. He played in England’s top four divisions for 20 years, making 141 appearances in the Premier League.

The former goalkeeper was diagnosed with primary sclerotic cholangitis in 2023 and four-stage bile duct cancer in 2024.

His daughter Kaley and son Carter (24) run the Leicester Half Marathon to raise funds for AMMF, a bile duct cancer charity. Kayleigh wrote on his Just Giving Page: “This isn’t a simple post, but I feel it’s important to share the story.

“In September 2023, our incredible father, Russell Holt, was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Almost a year later, in August 2024, he received devastating news that he also had stage 4 bile duct cancer (clinical duct cancer).

“Most recently, we have been told that both conditions are terminals and Dad is currently in palliative care, which is very difficult for his family to agree.

“Our father means the world to us. His strength, courage and sense of humor were not shaken in the face of such overwhelming challenges. We want to do something positive not only to support him, but to help others who are facing the same illness.

“So, on October 26, 2025, we will run a half marathon in his honor and raise money for the AMMF – bile duct cancer charity.”

At the time of writing, the page had donated £7,089 from 322 people. “He’s overwhelmed by the fundraising and how much we’ve raised so far, and as a family, we really want us to raise it for such a good reason,” Kayley told the BBC. “My dad was an absolutely amazing guy both inside and outside, and has always been a role model for myself and my siblings.

“My dad never has any boring moments. He is very positive and happy, even after the toughest times. He loves to laugh so much and crack everyday jokes in life. He is an absolute legend in every way.”

She added: “He’s a character and he doesn’t take life seriously. There are good and bad days, but he’s not giving up. He’s a warrior, and this helps our family stay strong too.
