The Football Association has filed accusations against Chelsea of breaking transfer rules regarding agent payments and third-party ownership of players. The FA confirmed that 74 claims were brought against Enzo Maresca’s part.
The official ruling states: “The Football Association today requested Chelsea FC for violations of FA Football Agent Regulations J1 and C2, as well as regulations A2 and A3 for FA regulations regarding cooperation with intermediaries, with regulations A1 and B3 for FA third party investments in player regulations totaling, Chelsea has received subsidies. It is mainly related to events that occurred in 2022, mainly between 2010/11 and 2015/16.
Despite previously self-reported cases from the Abramovich era in Rome, Chelsea could face additional fines, receive transfer embargoes, or even cut Premier League points if these payments were not registered in their annual report. Supporters hope that this season’s financial penalty is everything to look at as a team has been hit by a point deduction.
Middlesbrough – 1996-97
Middlesbrough’s three-point penalty was one of the most controversial top flight sanctions after cancelling away fixtures against Blackburn in December 1996.
On a three-point penalty, Middlesbrough fell in the Premier League from the 14th to the 19th, eventually leading to a relegation with just two points.
Portsmouth-2009-10
In the late noughties, Portsmouth was in a tough financial battle, unable to pay staff and players for several months. By February 2010, the club had changed its hands for the third time and joined the government.
However, Pompeii’s anguish was not over. The Premier League declared they docked nine points for their financial ruin. In March, points were deducted, effectively sealing off their fate and relegation to the championship. In a statement, the Premier League said: “Following the High Court’s decision that Portsmouth FC’s administration is in effect, the Premier League Board convened today to apply the league’s rules and policies in relation to member clubs struggling with the bankruptcy events.
“As a result, Portsmouth FC is immediately effective and deducted nine points. As part of this process, the board met with the administrators and agreed to how they would cooperate over the rest of the season so that the club can meet its commitments.”
Everton-2023-24
Everton recently faced a double deduction on the point deduction after violating Premier League profitability and sustainability rules. It was discovered that Toffee miscalculated his PSR over the 2021/22 season, resulting in his first 10-point deduction in the 2023/24 season.
However, the penalty fell from 10 to 6 points after the appeal. In April 2024, Everton suffered an additional 2-point deduction due to economic losses during the 2022/23 season.
This led them to a Premier League relegation scrap, but they managed to stop the drop. Once Top Flight status was secured in May, Everton withdrew the appeal and continued in the Premier League.
Nottingham Forest-2023/24
Nottingham Forest also found himself on warm waters in the 2023/24 season, but their punishment wasn’t as severe as Everton. Tricky Tree slipped into the demobilization zone after receiving a four-point deduction to violate the PSR rules.
The penalty caused the forest to fall to 18th place, but later revolved to score six points out of the drop zone in 17th place. Despite losing more than four points over Forest, Everton was second ahead of 15th.
