Manchester City could be on the brink of a major U-turn, including Forgotten Man Calvin Phillips. The midfielder joined the Blues in 2022 as part of a whopping £45 million transfer from Leeds United.
But the midfielder walked through the doors of Etihad Stadium and quickly came the disaster. A preseason injury required Phillips to undergo surgery, and by the time he returned to full fitness it was during the World Cup during the season in Qatar. By the time Phillips returned from his English duties, he felt that his city career was already dead underwater.
City boss Pep Guardiola criticized Phillips’ health on his return, and Phillips finished the season with just 21 appearances in his name. By the time the next January rolled, he had been loaned to West Ham United before spending his 2024/25 campaign in Ipswichtown.
Heading towards the transfer window this summer, there was a suggestion that writing was on the wall for Phillips, who was expected to leave a permanent deal. It didn’t happen, but it appears to be about to be given an unexpected lifeline from Guardiola and Co.
The city is reported by Telegraph to name Phillips with a team of 25 for the 2025/26 Premier League season. It represents a breakaway from their initial plans for York Sileman, and perhaps gives Phillips the opportunity to revive his city career. The 29-year-old hasn’t played since May, but it is claimed that Phillips will be given a chance on Guardiola’s match-day team.
Phillips was filmed in City Training earlier this week and helped remove the load from the Blues’ starting midfielder with a busy schedule of games on the horizon. Alternatively, City has a gap at the team’s right-back, giving Guardiola a success by turning the midfielder into a full-back. Perhaps where will his future be?
City will return to Premier League action this weekend when Manchester United visits Etihad Stadium. In three games last season, Guardiola was unable to improve Reuben Amorim once, and there was a suggestion that the Portuguese tactician had a number of Catalonian counterparts.
The 2023 high-pitched winner can’t afford a more slip-up, considering he’s already lost three games this season. Meanwhile, United enters the derby before City at the table.
