Liverpool was interested in signing Julian Alvarez before departing Manchester City for Atletico Madrid in a £81 million deal and suggesting to trade Luis Diaz to strikers
Liverpool proposed trading Julian Alvarez’s Manchester City with Wataway’s winger Louis Diaz last summer.
Diaz left Liverpool and joined Bayern Munich in July on a deal worth £65.5 million, ending his two and a half years of stay with the club. Columbia International is a key part of the party managed by Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, returning 41 goals and 23 assists in 148 games for the club.
The 28-year-old was a regular starter last season as Liverpool won the Premier League title in his slot debut campaign. But if Diaz had been upset by the move from Anfield and gained his wish that summer, Diaz would not have lifted the trophy.
Diaz was volatile in the summer of 2024, and Liverpool’s chief wanted to set out for City, then the defending Premier League champion. Reports linking Diaz with the movement between the two giants emerged at the time, but soon declined as it became clear that he remained in place.

However, Telegraph reports that the idea of a stunning swap transaction between the two clubs actually floats. Diaz turned his head at the city’s interest in him, so Liverpool decides to respond by showing interest in Alvarez.
A swap of two players was proposed, but was shot down quickly, and the city was reluctant to do business with its direct rivals. Diaz stayed at Liverpool where he knucked and had a great season with the club, scoring 17 goals and six assists in 50 games before heading to Bayern.
However, Alvarez moved last summer and secured a large sum of money from City to Atletico Madrid in August 2024. Atleti agreed to pay the striker a £64.4 million initial fee.
He remains on the Spanish side and continues his impressive scoring record, assisting eight times in 60 appearances with 30 goals and eight assists. The 25-year-old forward was linked to a move back to the Premier League during the summer transfer period, but nothing happened, probably as he was on a contract until June 2030 and ordered a huge fee.
Just signing Federico Chiesa in the summer of 2024, Liverpool blew £450 million this summer, bringing Hugo Equicchique, Alexander Isaac and Florian Wurtz to bolster the offense following the departure of Diaz and Darwin Nunes and the tragic death of Diogo Jota in the Car Clash.
Liverpool have started the 2025/26 season at the top of the table with three consecutive Premier League wins. They will face Burnley when the league resumes this weekend after an international break.
