Nottingham Forest fired Nuno Espirito Santo after a behind-the-scenes drama involving Portuguese coach and EDU over some of the club’s summer transfer business
Evangelos Marinakis’ movement and fierce feud with newly appointed right-hand man Edu have proven to be the catalyst for Nuno Espirito Santo’s departure from Nottingham Forest. The forest confirmed early Tuesday morning that 51-year-old Nuno had been given a march order with Ange Post Ecoglu, poised to take over him on the city grounds.
Nuno’s exit comes just two weeks after he publicly shared that he and the club’s newly appointed global football manager, Edu, have already broken down and that Nuno and Marinakis are not on the same page.
Edu’s arrival, and the expanded influence of his representative, Kia Joarabian, were key factors in the uncertainty. Marinakis relied heavily on the so-called “superagent” Jorge Mendes during the rise of the forest in recent years to adapt and evolve his team. However, the decision to hand over the power of the Ax Arenaar sports director has seen largely cut relations with Mendes, and Nuno’s comments have significantly reduced the deal.

This summer, including record-breaking acquisition Omari Hutchinson, the club’s pursuit of signatures was driven by the EDU. Hutchinson, represented by Joorabchian’s agency, arrived from Ipswich Town on a deal worth £37.5 million. He was omitted from Forest’s Europa League team by Nuno last week. This shows that England Under 21 International was not the player the Portuguese really wanted.
Another signature that was heavily influenced by the Edujoravian axis is Douglas Lewis, a former Aston villa midfielder who had previously tried to sign Arsenal. His previous forest career consists of two games as unused alternatives, but Hutchinson was featured in less than 10 minutes in total during his match against Crystal Palace and West Ham.
On the Nuno side, he insisted on the signature of Adama Traore following the exit of Anthony Elanga. A player he was well known from his previous stints with Wolves. However, Forest had reserved about replacing Elanga with an older player, especially if it was unclear whether the trolls fantasized the move. Nuno also wanted cover in the full-back area and goal.
However, the club’s top brass felt there was a mixed signal when the club began to deliver on his request to ensure that each position was equipped with two players. Portuguese coaches have traditionally worked with small teams. Especially during the most successful stint in British football with wolves.
In fact, it appears Nuno has never returned after he was revealed in a powershift in Forest, citing his relationship with club owner Marinakis as “changed” at an explosive press conference before the international break.
Marinakis’ decision to say goodbye to the head coach who took part in the conversation for last season’s Manager of the Year Awards is scrutinized after Nuno exceeds all expectations to bring the club back to Europe.
But the confusion behind the scenes means something simply has to give, and in this example it was Nuno.
