Trent Alexander Arnold was “surprised” to discover that Real Madrid had stolen £10 million to end Liverpool’s contract midway through and allow FIFA clubs to play in the World Cup.

England’s right-back was already set to leave with a free transfer to Madrid. This is a move that sparked rage among many Reds supporters, and is upset that one of their country’s talent and most valuable assets wasted the club.

And when the club’s season-ending open-top bus parade celebrated its Premier League title victory, Fenway Sports Group’s Football Chief Executive Michael Edwards told Alexander Arnold that Madrid had made the move. As The Telegraph first reported, Edwards, Liverpool sports director Richard Hughes and FSG president Mike Gordon defeated the news that the switch to the Bernabéu had gone a month ahead.

The Spanish giants had already secured Alexander Arnold’s signature when Liverpool’s contract ended, but wanted to take him to the Club World Cup, which kicked off in June before the contract went up. The £10 million spending was important, but the prize money for the tournament winner was almost £100 million, and the Los Blancos decided it was a cost worth paying.

Ultimately, Madrid made his appearance in the semi-finals, but at least Liverpool received some compensation against Alexander Arnold.

Liverpool secured the service of Dutch international Jeremy Fripon a few days later, signing him from Bayer Leberkusen to replace Alexander Arnold, kickstarting a splurge on a record-breaking summer transfer.

Like Alexander Arnold’s Liverpool fans, Newcastle supporters were furious with Isaac’s attitude before his exit. However, former Liverpool icon Dietmar Hamann believes he cannot compare the situation surrounding each exit.

“I don’t think I can compare Alexander Isaac to Trent Alexander Arnold because Trent did nothing wrong,” Haman told Coinpoker. “If Liverpool wanted to keep him, they could have offered him an improved contract a year ago, and perhaps he would have signed it.

“The fact that they didn’t, and that he ran out of his contract, means he’s free to go where he wants.”
