Reuben Amorim, who is in charge of Manchester United, has not started swimming in his first full season. Former Red Devils defender Phil Jones admits that some players have not taken to Portugal’s manager

Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones admits that Red Devils players may not like head coach Reuben Amorim, but this is the reality for most football clubs. The Portuguese boss was responsible for his first full season at Old Trafford, backed by songs that cost more than £200 million this summer.

The promising opening league defeat to Arsenal was quickly forgotten after a lack of a 1-1 draw at Fulham. A new Law was hit when Amorim’s side met the town of Grimsby in the Carabao Cup.

These were slightly quelled by a somewhat fortunate 3-2 victory over Burnley last time.

The club is confused, and even worse, former United centre half-Jones, who has performed over 200 appearances for them, thinks that like most aspects, Amorim’s cohort selection doesn’t like the managers.

“Do you think United had a player he didn’t like? To be honest, that’s probably a stupid question.

“But maybe there are players in Man City who feel the same way about (PEP) Guardiola. They can’t stand him. There are people like that on every team.

“These are big groups of players and different personalities, and they are all competitive and I think they should play more than they do.

“That never changes. Even when the manager was flying, believing in me, ‘Well, he’s not playing me, so he’s not good’, I was there myself.

“You need to understand what’s going on, pull yourself out of your *** and go back to where you need to go back. Nine out of 10, that’s the problem.

“But it comes with experience: the more mature I got, the more games I played, and the more managers I got, the more I knew everything.

“You know, the problem wasn’t the manager. It was me. When I think about some players now, I find it very easy to pass the responsibility to the manager.

“The manager wasn’t great. The coaches who took the training sessions weren’t great. But did they really do? Did they?

Amorim and United face tough jobs after an early international break and have to travel to Etihad to face rival Manchester City. They then welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford, second of two important fixtures during Amorim’s tenure.
