Thomas Frank laughs at the end after a dramatic slow twist changes Spurs’ transfer window

There was a moment when Spurs’ transfer window looked like a disaster, but the late business on Thomas Frank’s side showed that it wasn’t finished until it was finished

Tottenham spent most of the summer being a laughing stock in the transfer window. But now the windows are finally closed, so it’s Spurs boss Thomas Frank who has the right to give him the final laugh.

After missing out on Eberechi Eze, Morgan Gibbs-White, Bryan Mbeumo and more, it looks like it’s going to be a summer of frustration. Tottenham saw Eze go to his bitter rival Arsenal, Gibbs White chose to stay in Nottingham Forest, and Mbemo chose Manchester United before the Spurs.

But looking at the final results after spending over £170 million, they appeared with stronger teams, proven internationals and better options. And to put the cherry blossoms on the cake, they also made their own Gazamp by signing Dutch International Zabi Simons for £51 million from RB Leipzig from under Chelsea’s nose.

If Arsenal can do that, Tottenham can do that too. And the reality is that Tottenham is Frank’s ambitious new manager and has the reward for playing in the Champions League this season.

They also recovered £45 million by cashing it into their sons Heung-Min, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Bryan Gil. This number actually means Tottenham is the fourth-largest net spender in the Premier League in the last five years, after only Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

It’s hard to criticize President Daniel Levy for spending – they just didn’t tend to spend money wisely. It was something they decided to change this summer, and it was done with combined thinking between Frank, technical director Johann Lange, Levi, new CEO Vinai Venkatesham, and other members of the recruitment and scouting team.

Last season ended at Tottenham’s highs as Ange Postecoglou’s farewell gift was in the Europa League. But the reason they lost 22 games and admitted 65 goals in the Premier League wasn’t just a leaky defense.

Seeing Tottenham not yelling for an in-season deal with midfield anchorman, it’s just over £4 million on loan fees, making it a surprising business for Joan Paljinja. It may be one of the best deals of the summer as he hired Portugal International from Bayern Munich, so he knows he is sensational and very consistent for Fulham. There will also be an option to buy him for just £27 million next summer.

They spent £55 million on West Ham’s Mohamed Kudus, and Frank’s influence is clear. Now, Tottenham has not only quality wide players, but also players who work very hard. Simons was doomed to Chelsea for the summer, but as the deal wasn’t over, Tottenham plunged, and his quality as a NO10 is a perfect fit after losing James Madison for the majority of the season with a knee injury.

They probably didn’t have that position in their vision until Madison was injured, but they pressed Simons’ buttons and they have international quality. They spent £5 million on Kota Takai for the future, turning Matthiztel and Kevin Danso into permanent deals.

When Randal Kolo Muani became available late in the window, Tottenham quickly signed a contract with Paris Saint-Germain for a bargain. Overall, Tottenham is able to attack better offensive options, experience, quality, and teams that look remarkably strong at the edge of the window. And that is the greatest purpose of all, as managers and sports directors testify.
