Nottingham Forest is a club where boss Nuno Espirito Santo is in conflict with owner Evangelos Marinakis and the Portuguese coach makes another mysterious decision and is split straight into the middle.
Just six months ago, it would have been infeasible to suggest that Nottingham Forest was a broken club. On March 8, 2025, the Midlands side defeated the Champions Manchester City, taking third in the Premier League, bringing the Champions League location back on track.
Towards the end of the season there was a drop-off of form – the forest slides down to the seventh – the European location still represents a great campaign on the side of Nuno Espirito Santo. After all, this was a club that endured two years of asylum from the top flight and fell into the third tier of English football.
But things have since looked disappointed. Director Nuno and owner Evangelos Marinakis are on each other’s throats, and their relationship has been “changed” according to the former wolf boss.
Meanwhile, Nuno soon clashed with the newly appointed EDU, leaving the forest straight into the middle. And it looks like it’s spilled on the pitch – the forest is defeated 3-0 by West Ham, who doesn’t win the weekend.
Despite Marinakis trying to patch things up with the head coach, the Greeks dug into their pockets for a slow recruit, but it doesn’t seem to satisfy Nuno. He has placed a £37.5 million signing Omali Hutchinson from the Europa League team, but also omitted the deadline arrival Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Forest must comply with UEFA rules and cannot register all players. However, this seems to be a clear message from Nuno. It is he who guides the decisions of the club’s soccer side. I am not the person in charge of recruitment.
Nuno has yet to reveal the exact reason behind these omissions, but it could be simply tactical. Some suggest that the competition Hutchinson faces is the driving force behind him being removed from the interim list.
But given the money he spent and the talent he has, that excuse certainly doesn’t lie. The decision to rule out Zinchenko is baffling given his experience and versatility. He was an ideal addition to his team ahead of what would be expected to be a tough campaign.

One of the people included is midfielder Elliot Anderson. The 22-year-old has been key to Forest’s rise since his travels from Boyhood Club Newcastle.
And he is clear about his loyalty. He was asked after an international break if he wanted Nuno to still be the boss of the forest, and he replied.
“He’s really good for me. He feels that he’s given me the freedom to go out and do what I do. He believes in me.
“He’s been saying, ‘I’ll go out and play your training methods.’ It really helped me. Team freedom gave me a platform to do well.
“Now I’m just focusing on this camp and doing my best here, and when I get back, I’ll focus on the club.”
It would be surprising to see forest athletes allowing everyone take a different attitude towards Nuno’s future. And now it’s at a crossroads at the Midlands Club right now.
Could they move the manager to the person who took him to this position and turn all of that positive work back? Or do they stick to him and hope that the situation can fix itself?
That is a difficult decision for Marinakis. And while that argument is furious in the boardroom on the ground of the city, you could have two soccer players without European football.
Forest is a broken club now, and in just five months you have to question how it is dramatically wrong.
