Man UTD’s priorities in the Transfer Window were as much off-road players as the players were signing.
For Manchester United, the summer transfer window was just as much to clean up the deck as it would strengthen Reuben Amorim’s team.
After the arrival of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, United’s focus shifted to offloading Amorim’s “bomb squad.” Namely Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia.
United have made significant financial savings by abandoning four of these five – Malacia is still there – and in terms of wages they recovered money in transfers and loans, but they took a big blow to Antony.

The first person to get out the door was Rashford. He lost favour for Amorim for a month after the arrival of the Portuguese head coach, and rented out the second half of last season at Aston Villa.
The English striker, who is included in Thomas Tuschel’s newest team, received an in-season loan to Barcelona, covering all of Rashford’s £325,000 weekly wages.
Under the terms of the transaction, Barka has the option of permanently signing 27-year-old Rashford at the end of the loan agreement, a fee representing the pure profits of the balance sheet when complying with the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for its status as an academy alumni.
The same can be said about Garnacho, who also fell for Amorim’s foul after publicly criticising United managers for dropping him for the final defeat of a 1-0 European Reedi to Tottenham in Bilbao on May 21.
From that moment on, Garnacho had no future at United, and along with the rest of the Bomb Squad, he was told to suspend United’s pre-season American pre-season tour and find a new club.
Although interested in many European clubs, including Naples and Villas, Garnacho put his heart into the move to Chelsea, United ultimately agreed to a permanent £40 million deal for the Argentine star, negotiated Chelsea from its first £25 million offer, securing a pure profit again against the balance sheet due to the academy’s product status.
Garnacho, which was nominal fees when he arrived from Atletico Madrid, became United’s biggest academy sale.
Perhaps the most expensive flop in United’s history, Antony represented the biggest hit they took in the window, but the only bounty was to accept a low fee to ensure that they didn’t have to pay a retirement allowance to the Brazilian winger as part of his early departure.
Sancho’s deadline season’s loan move to villa represents another nomadic chapter of Outcast’s miserable United career. The Villa agrees to cover 80% or Sancho’s £300,000 per week wages, and once certain performance-related clauses are complete, United expects full compensation of their pay.
This will leave Fullback Malacia as the sole member of the bomb squad that will remain at United, but he can still secure a move to the league (loan or permanent) where the windows remain open.
United have achieved most of their goals in terms of bomb squads in terms of wage recovery, from the perspective of players sold and loaned. While Rashford and Garnacho went through the club’s academy, Antony, Sancho and Malacia were signed to a total of £173 million before wages were considered.
According to club sources, they maintain financial discipline in terms of fees paid and in regards to PSR compliance. Offloading the bomb squad continued the evolution of United squads, which always took multiple windows.
This season, Amorim has always had to work with small teams, as there are fewer equipment without European football. Now he has the players he wanted and is removing people who are not part of his plan, no excuse
