Former Manchester United manager Eric Ten Hag returned to top flight football in the summer with Bayer Leberkusen, but his tenure at the German club lasted just two months.
Former Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag Cost Bayer Leverkusen makes the club huge 100,000 euros (£86,000) per day. Ten Hag was fired by Leverkusen after three competitive matches, only two of whom appeared in Bundesliga.
Ten Hag was handed a tough job after taking over from Xabi Alonso. Leverkusen won cash for many members of the 2023-24 double-winning team, including Florian Wirtz and Granit Xhaka, leaving the new boss with a major reconstruction operation in hand.
However, he was only given 60 days at the helm, but Leverkusen pulled the trigger after the team dumped a 3-1 lead and dumped a draw with 10 Vader Bremen. Ten Hag scored 1 point from his two Bundesliga games in charge, but he oversaw a 4-0 cup victory over the four-stage Sonnenhof Großaspach.
According to Bild, the source of the reported 6 million euro payments, Leverkusen was ready to throw away the 10 hugs earlier than that. The publication reports that his boss “was able to direct all departments, organizations and players towards him in a very short time.”
Even before the looting was confirmed, the club reports that they were in the transfer business without the knowledge of their managers. Former Real Madrid defender Lucas Vazquez joined as a free agent after discussing with the managing director of Sports Simon Rolfs.

“The separation of methods at this early stage of the season is painful, but we felt it was necessary,” Fernando Carro, CEO of Leverkusen, said following the firing of 10 HAGs. Rolfes added, “This decision was not an easy one for us.”
“No one wanted to take this step,” Rolfs continued. “However, the past few weeks have shown that building a new and successful team with this setup is ineffective. We are a firm believer in the quality of our teams and we will do everything we can to take the next step in development with our new setup.”
Ten Hag, on his side, angered the club had not given him long to make his mark, pointing to his record of winning silverware in his previous work. His summer spending was just under £150 million, with Wirtz selling over £200 million, and former Premier League stars Mark Flekken and Jarell Quansah were booked amid new arrivals.
“The new coach deserves the space to implement his vision, set standards, shape his team and leave his mark in the style of play,” the former Ajax boss wrote. “I started this job with complete confidence and energy, but unfortunately the managers didn’t try to give me the time and trust I needed.
“The decision of Bayer Leverkusen’s management to take a leave of absence this morning came as a complete surprise. Saying goodbye to the coach after just two league matches is unprecedented.
“A lot of key players who have been part of past successes have left the team this summer, and building a new, cohesive team is a careful process that requires both time and trust.
“The new coach deserves the space to implement his vision, set standards, shape his squad and leave his mark in his style of play. I started this job with full belief and energy, but unfortunately the managers didn’t give me the time and trust I needed.
“I feel this isn’t a relationship based on mutual trust. Throughout my career, my coaches have been successful so I was able to watch it all the way through every season.
“The club that put my trust in me was rewarded with success and silverware. Finally, I would like to thank the warmth and passion of Bayer Leverkusen’s supporters.
