Alejandro Garnacho joined Manchester United’s Chelsea this summer, but his choice of shirt number at Stamford Bridge is a throwback to his old Trafford Days
Alejandro Garnacho may have left Manchester United under the clouds, but Chelsea’s choice of shirt numbers reminds him of his happy days at Old Trafford.
Argentine winger Garnacho became part of United manager Reuben Amorim’s infamous “bomb squad” before the end of last season, and was limited to training with other unnecessary stars this summer, Marcas Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrel Malacia.
At the time of the transfer window closure, only Malacia remained at United, Rashford and Sancho lend to Barcelona and Aston Villa, respectively, while Antony returned to Real Betis, who enjoyed last season’s successful loan spell, and Garnacho joined Chelsea for £40 million.
Garnacho, 21, said goodbye to United fans on Instagram, saying, “After five unforgettable years, this special chapter of my life is coming to an end.

“Thank you to my coach, staff and my teammates for believing in me. Every time I put on my badge, I gave everything I had.
“We are proud of what we have achieved together and are excited about what will come, and we hope that the club will do nothing but future success.
And Garnacho, who was selected for Chelsea’s Champions League team on Wednesday, reminds me of his time at United every time he sees the blues shirt.
That’s because the Argentinians chose the No. 49 shirt at Stamford Bridge.
After finishing his move to Chelsea, Garnacho claimed to have joined the perfect club for him.
“I have a victory mentality. I have a passion and a big character. It fits naturally into a club like Chelsea, who just won the Club World Cup,” he said.
“Chelsea is on the top right now. It’s important to compete for the club, just as it deserves the fans. I watch the Club World Cup and be a part of the World Championship is special.
“It’s not common to play a lot of games at this age, but it helped me a lot. I’m 21 and I’ve had a lot of experience from these different kinds of games, stadiums, from the moment.”
