Former Liverpool and Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has announced a written apology after appearing to have spit on Seattle Sounders staff in the League Cup final. Intermiami lost 3-0 in the tournament finale. This has forced Major League Soccer and Mexican La Liga MX top teams to compete against each other for silverware, despite boasting a star-studded lineup featuring Suarez and Lionel Messi.

North American football authorities are believed to have begun an investigation into Suarez’s conduct. Uruguay International has been pulled away from Sounders security chief Jean Ramirez, who allegedly spewed in his direction. “First of all, I want to congratulate the Seattle Sounders on their League Cup victory,” Suarez posted on Instagram.

“But more importantly, I want to apologise for my actions at the end of the game. It was a moment filled with tension and frustration that should have happened at the end of the game, but it doesn’t justify my reaction. I made a mistake.

“That’s not the image I want to portray in front of my family suffering from my errors, and (Intermiami) doesn’t deserve to be affected by this either.

“We still know that a lot of seasons will play. We’re going to work together to achieve the goals this club and its fans deserve.”

InterMiami has issued its own statement regarding the incident.

“Intermiami condemns the altercation that took place after the League Cup finals,” the club wrote. “These actions do not reflect the values of our sport, and we remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of sportsmanship on and off the pitch.

“We are working closely with Leagues Cup and MLS executives to ensure that the situation is handled properly. We appreciate the continued support of our fans and our community.”

The League Cup final itself ended with a compelling Sounders victory.

Osergie de Rosario defeated Deadlock during the opening period, with Alex Roldan expanding his advantage from 12 yards with six minutes remaining, while Paul Rossrock sealed the victory with a third.

“Unfortunately, it’s going to attract attention from the incredible performances by the Seattle Sounders,” coach Brian Schmetzer said of the Suarez incident shortly after the victory.

“Their players were irritated, which led to what was happening on the field that shouldn’t have happened.

“Because it should not be a story. The story of the game isn’t something that happened after the game. I had a quiet moment with Messi on the field (after the game).
