Transfer deadline peaked in the early 2010s.

Few clubs had a memorable, chaotic deadline day like Liverpool in January 2011. Despite not having started the 2010/11 season under Roy Hodgson and finishing in seventh by January, there was a good feeling around Anfield.

However, the extremely unpopular Hodgson was fired and club legend Kenny Dalglish was appointed manager until the end of the season. At the top, the current ownership Fenway Sports Group had just replaced Tom Hicks and George Gillett as owners.

However, the good feeling didn’t last as it became clear that Chelsea is keen to land a fan favorite Torres. The Spaniard, who was a revelation when he arrived in 2007, was restless with 33 goals hauling in his debut season.

A hamstring injury and knee surgery in 2010 caused Torres to lose yards of pace on the pitch. In other words, despite scoring 22 goals in 2009/10, his play was struggling. And while his name was still enthusiastically covered by Anfield’s loyal people, the departure of manager Rafa Benitez made him share a close bond and uncertainty regarding the ownership of the club.

Torres tried to pledge his commitment to Liverpool in August 2010, saying, “My commitment and loyalty to the club and the fans are the same as the first day I signed it.”

The disastrous performance under Hodgson soon ended, with Sentiment and Chelsea approaching the Reds on January 27th with an offer of £40 million. It was rejected by Liverpool.

A day later, Torres handed over a transfer request, breaking the hearts of Liverpool fans. On the deadline day, Liverpool accepted a £50 million mammoth bid, setting a new record for the UK transfer, becoming the sixth most expensive footballer in history at the time.

He signed a five-and-a-half year deal with Stamford Bridgeside, and Liverpool’s direct Premier League rivals shook his legacy with the club and were booed with future equipment.

Already anticipating the need for a replacement in the second half of the window, Liverpool completed the signing of Luis Suarez from Ajax around 9pm on the closing day on a contract worth £22.8 million, making the Uruguayan the club’s most expensive signature.

However, they were not satisfied with Suarez’s arrival alone. A few hours later, my record broke a few minutes before the January 31 deadline. The Reds have completed a stunning £35 million deal to sign Andy Carroll from Newcastle.

“It’s a dream to be able to come here and play,” Suarez said as he arrived. “My ambition for the future is to do my best for Liverpool, learn more about British football and become a champion.”

Meanwhile, Dalglish spoke about how Carroll fits into the club after his sensational breakthrough in Newcastle.

“He’s a little different from what we’re used to, but it doesn’t change the principles and philosophy of how we want to play.”

In total, more than £100 million was spent on three strikers in just one day. Within a week, I got a glimpse into what’s going on. Suarez scored in his Liverpool debut with Stoke. Torres struggled with his first Chelsea look, his defeat to Liverpool, but Carol was sidelined by a thigh injury.

Torres scored a key goal leading up to Chelsea’s 2012 Champions League Final Triumph, but was extremely overwhelmed in West London, with Carroll scoring just 11 goals for the Reds before departing for West Ham.

Suarez has proven to be the true heir to Torres of Liverpool. The controversial striker scored 82 goals in 133 appearances, including 31 in his final season, before scoring a big move for Barcelona in 2014.
