Tottenham announced that Daniel Levy had resigned from his role as executive chairman at the club 24 years later. He oversaw a wide transformation into a team competing in Europe almost every season. His last full campaign at the helm led Tottenham to win the Europa League, the first major trophy since 2008.

Levy also coordinated his move from White Hart Lane to the cutting-edge Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019. He was often a controversial figure in North London and was regularly fired by his supporters as he was perceived as unable to reinvest the wealth he gained by raising the club. His departure is likely to trigger a complicated response among Tottenham’s fanbase.

News of Levy’s exit was confirmed Friday evening, with Tottenham announced that Peter Charlington will step into the newly created role of non-executive chairman.

Levi said: “I am incredibly proud of the work I have done with the executive team and all of my employees. We have built this club into a global heavyweight competition that competes at the highest levels.

“More than that, we’ve built a community. I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the greatest people of the sport, from the team at the Lily White House to all the players and managers over the years.

“I would like to thank all the fans who have supported me over the years. It has not always been an easy journey, but important progress has been made. I will continue to support this club passionately.”

Meanwhile, Charlington added: “I am extremely honored to be the non-executive president of this extraordinary club and, on behalf of the board, I would like to thank Daniel and his family for their commitment and loyalty to the club over the years.

“This is a new era of leadership for the club, both on and off the pitch, and I recognize that there have been a lot of changes over the last few months as we laid new foundations for our future.

“We are now giving stability and empowering talent across the club led by Vinai (Chief Executive Officer) and his management team.”

Tottenham also confirmed that there were no changes to the club’s ownership or shareholder structure in light of Levy’s departure.

Their first match, not at the helm, is an away fixture against West Ham United’s rivals next weekend. Three days later, they begin a Champions League campaign with Villarreal at home.
