Crystal Palace captain Mark Gehi was forced to stay with the club after pulling the plug on a £35 million deadline transfer to Liverpool at the final moments
Mark Guech plans to leave Crystal Palace as a free agent next summer after seeing the deadline to Liverpool be blocked.
Guech was hoping that Palace President Steve Parish would join Liverpool on Monday after accepting an offer of £35 million for the centre-back. However, despite completing medical care in London and booking a private jet to foam him to Merseyside, the deal fell apart.
After Palace Manager Oliver Glasner threatened to resign, Parish changed his mind. Glasner had made it clear for a few weeks that Guehi could not be sold without a replacement arrive and was willing to walk on principles.
Eventually, the palace boss walks his path, but he is left with a very angry Guehi. The 25-year-old defender has been praised for Saga’s professionalism and continues to focus by playing football.

He believed that he would win Aston Villa 3-0 on Sunday, making it his final match for the club. However, according to the Times, he decided on the next step alongside England for an international break at St. George’s Park.
Guehi has decided to resist the proposal to sign a new contract with the palace, which he has represented since July 2021. He plans to take away the transfer fees by resigning as a free agent when his contract expires on July 1, 2026, rather than leaving in the January transfer window.
That’s exactly what the parish was keen to avoid in the first place. The co-owner and chairman were open about the need for the palace to consider their economic realities and authorized Arsenal to sell Ebebeki Eze for £67.5 million.
He also knew that Monday represented the club’s last chance to bring a decent fee to Guehi. “If Mark wants to sign a new contract, he can stay!” Parrish said after beating Fredrikstad 1-0 in the Conference League playoffs. “It’s a difficult situation. Everyone has to sell players to adhere to the rules. That’s a situation that we’ll have to watch over the next 11 days.”
However, the palace was unable to secure a direct replacement for Gehi, which infuriated Glasner. The club thought Igor Giulio had agreed to a loan move with Brighton, but the Brazilians decided to opt for West Ham instead.
After showing interest in Manuel Akanji in Manchester City, Mohammed Solis in Monaco and Jeremy Jackets in Rennes, they signed 19-year-old Toulouse defender Jadee Canbot for £21 million.
The Palace will face Sunderland at Selhurst Park on September 13th, and it is emotional for Guech. The defender will now remain in England. England will face Andorra and Serbia in World Cup qualifiers in the coming days, but will have to return to the palace soon.
