The town of Grimsby was given a financial penalty to send out unqualified players during a stunning Carabao Cup victory through Manchester United. Reuben Amorim’s team suffered from a 12-11 penalty shootout loss at Brandel Park as Brian Mbeumo fluffy a key spot kick following a 2-2 deadlock.
The Lincolnshire Club was punished after registering Clark O’Dour just past the EFL mandatory deadline. Grimsby then reported administrative errors and urged the EFL board to begin enquiries. The EFL was punished by the Mariners and issued a statement confirming violations of the rules.
Given that the FA Cup precedent witnessed clubs being forced out of the competition, speculation has emerged as to whether Dave Artell’s team should be expelled from the tournament for a breaches.
Barnsley was removed from the FA Cup in 2023 following the use of ineligible players during the first round of replay victory over Horsham.
The important detail, however, is that the issue appears to have been resolved and Grimsby’s progress towards the third round has been ratified.
The EFL statement stated, “After considering previous decisions made regarding crimes in the League Cup, following a comprehensive review of all evidence, the board has determined that the issuance of the fine continued to precede.”
The FA and EFL operate under various regulations on the issue, noting that the FA is taking the issue more seriously. At this stage it remains unclear whether United will make further clarity or appeal the decision the EFL has made.
Amorim’s team scored two goals at halftime due to a failure from Andre Onana, but Mbeumo and Harry Maguire were equal.
The match then went directly to a penalty shootout. There, United were eventually eliminated after former Brentford player Mbeumo blasted a shot from the bar, securing Grimsby’s progress towards the third round.
