Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over Newcastle United should be subject to a Premier League investigation, according to former PGMOL director Keith Hackett. The Premier League champions scored all three points thanks to a 100-minute winner by teenage star Rio Nugumoha.
The Reds were aiming for the victory as they led 2-0 through goals from Ryan Gravenbert and Hugo Echicicke. After Anthony Gordon was fired in the first half for a Virgil Van Dick challenge, the hosts also went up to 10.
However, the Magpie fought without away striker Alexander Isaac, and after Bruno Guimale reduced the arrears, Osra attacked to make it 2-2. It seemed set to give them a share of corruption before Nugumoha’s creepy finish went deep into the suspension time.

However, the game has received some criticism due to the amount of stops involved and little time the ball has spent playing. The game was punished with 32 fouls, and Newcastle also injured three players.
Also, according to Opta statistics, the ball was playing only 40.8% of the game. This is the lowest total in their first Premier League match in 15 years, as Stoke City defeated Blackburn Rovers in February 2010.
Former REF chief Hackett said these numbers were unacceptable and called on the Premier League to investigate – he jumped to umpire Simon Hooper’s defense.
Speaking to a football insider, he said: “This is a frankly unacceptable statistic. It can’t deliver the value of money to paid fans. The Premier League recommends that they start a survey to determine where time has been lost.
“Hooper is an official who prefers to minimize intervention and create good game flows. He recommends not to be responsible, but by ensuring that appropriate additional times are applied, it can clearly have a big impact on the amount of game time.
“There are issues with the game that aren’t overlooked. The Premier League has to be investigated.”
