Liverpool should be continuing their pursuit of Newcastle’s Alexander Isaac and are about to sign Mark Guech from Crystal Palace before the transfer window closes next week

The obvious story before the match was the pursuit of Liverpool’s Alexander Isaac.

It’s no secret that the Reds want to add another attacker before the window closes next week. It became an interesting subplot, but the game itself was more evidence that the red on the other end might need to be further strengthened.

Liverpool has already spent their defense with the arrival of Milos Kerquez, Jeremy Fripon and Giovanni Leoni, the latter of which is a promising 18-year-old centre-back. They have four senior players for the central roles of Virgil van Dyke, Ibrahima Conate, Joe Gomez and Leoni.

So there’s no desperate desire to recruit this summer, and they won’t panic like they do. However, after a previous poor match against Bournemouth, seeing Conate watches his fight against Newcastle, it was easy to see why they wanted Mark Guech.

It raised many eyebrows about why the Reds pursued Crystal Palace centreback. But if Konate is not a Reds non-pro-pair player and can land Guehi before the window closes, he’ll get a few minutes.

Clearly, the French defender’s contract status should be considered in just 12 months with a new deal that has not yet been agreed upon and his current one. Liverpool wants Conate to stay and continue the discussion, but Guech’s arrival gives them more peace of mind there.

Leoni is a centre-back who can play on both sides of the defense, but he feels that if he continues to develop, he could potentially replace Van Dyke in the future. He’ll get plenty of game time.

Gomez’s fitness should be a concern too. But the Reds also want to compete with Conate and Guehe, not only will they bring it, but will really push their position in their current team.

Guehi has revealed his desire to move to Anfield this summer. He has the belief that he can become a starter there. Considering the World Cup this summer, that’s a risk. However, he will boost himself to play well to ensure he is on the US Thomas Touchel team.

He played at the palace this season and was able to go to Liverpool for free next summer. That’s something the Reds won’t rule out if they can’t get the deal done. Palace boss Oliver Grassner doesn’t want to sell players, but Chairman Steve Parish knows that getting fees for him is extremely important to their finances.

Guehi is a transfer that will be able to descend to the wire next Monday. But this Monday may help Anfield’s hierarchy know that he should now promote him.
