Liverpool still has five days left in the summer transfer window, and Mark Laurenson believes their priorities should be clear after seeing the first few games of the season
Liverpool will need to prioritize signing Virgil van Dyke’s new centre-back partner for the remainder of the summer transfer period. That’s the opinion of the club legend Mark Lawrenson. Instead of pursuing Alexander Isaac, he urged them to focus on their defense.
Liverpool spent about £300 million to sign Hugo Echicicke, Florian Wiltz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremy Fripon, Giovanni Leoni, Armin Pessi and Freddie Woodman this summer. However, they continue to operate in the market as Newcastle striker Isaac and Crystal Palace captain Mark Guech are two main targets.
They saw a £110 million bid being rejected for ISAK at the beginning of August, but were still able to return with another offer before the windows closed on Monday. Meanwhile, Guehi Talks had a delay, and the palace refused to discuss his exit until the second half of the conference league playoffs with Fredrikstad on Thursday.
Liverpool’s defenses looked vulnerable. Bournemouth and Newcastle scored twice in the Premier League opening after Crystal Palace had similar delights on Community Shield. Ibrahima Conate was called out after struggling by Jamie Carager after a dramatic 3-2 defeat of Magpies on Monday night.

Former Red defender Laurenson is similarly concerned about Conate, Vandic’s long-term partner for £36 million from RB Leipzig in 2021.
“Isn’t Van Dick need another partner? With French boys (Conate) all over the place, he’s making all sorts of mistakes.
“But don’t forget they have another player who’s playing in the back right now. It’s not particularly good, but it gets better. It’s Liverpool. And if they need to sign someone, the transfer market may still be open.”

Guehi enters the final year of his palace contract and is accepting participation in Liverpool, but there are some hurdles left. The Palace will only do business after conference league matches. After that, exchanges line up and evaluations are met.
“We all thought about it a week before it was happening, but I think the palace is saying he has to stay,” Laurenson added. “But money changes things and the transfer window won’t close until next Monday. I’m sure there will be a lot of deals before that.”
The Palace’s value Guehi while Liverpool is reluctant to exceed £35 million for England International. Oliver Glasner’s side saw Manuel Acandi of Manchester City, Jeremy Jacket of Rennes and Jady Cambot of Toulouse as possible alternatives.
Liverpool hosted Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday in an early meeting of two potential title contenders. It was the last match before the transfer window closed and the international break arrived in September.
