PGMOL Chief Howard Webb spoke about the decision to rule out Fulham’s Josh King’s goal against Chelsea due to “careless challenge” by Rodrigo Muniz in the buildup

Howard Webb admitted that his team of officials had made an embarrassing mistake in eliminating Fulham’s goal against Chelsea. Fulham was furious after Josh King’s goal was choked on Saturday following a review of VAR in a 2-0 defeat by rivals.

King thought he had raised Fulham 1-0 to the Derby, but only decided that umpire Rob Jones had fouled early in the move. Muniz was determined to have put on a “careless challenge” to Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah near the midline with a buildup of counter attacks.

Professional Game Match Official Limited (PGMOL) dropped Michael Salisbury as a punishment for mistakes the following day in a Premier League match between Liverpool and Arsenal. Salisbury was Val, who worked with Jones, and proposed to see Muniz.

PGMOL Chief Webb called Fulham in admitting their complaints and said the goal should not be ruled out as it was not a clear and obvious error by the judge. Instead, it should have been considered a call to “judgment.”

“It was uncontroversial, it was wrong,” he said match officials micked up. “We have established some principles in terms of how to host the Premier League and how to use the VAR. They sit at a high threshold to punish contact. It helps the flow and rhythm and tempo of the game.

“We have also established a high bar for intervention in var. In other words, if the situation is clearly not wrong, the call will endure if the judge calls the field.

“We should only take away our goal if the evidence is very clear that that is the only thing we can do and that is the guidance we give to the authorities.”

Fulham manager Marco Silva described the decision as “incredible,” but defender Antony Robinson wrote on Instagram:

Webb added: “In that situation, that guidance was not properly followed. Officials involved in this situation misjudged how the contact occurred between Muniz and Chalobah. Officials were very focused on the contact without looking at the full context of how it happened.

“It happens when Muniz owns the ball, controls the ball, bends naturally and steps into a charoba with his feet moving into space where Fulham players have the right to put their feet in that normal way.

“Obviously, as always, we take learning. We see that we can do better to minimize these. But with regard to the appeal, we have done really well for the past 18 months or so to reduce almost every time in the right way.

“We understand the importance of these decisions. We understand that if we’re wrong as we did on this occasion, the impact is important and we’re always trying to do better.”
