Newcastle star Anthony Gordon issued a “honest apology” for his red card to Liverpool – Alan Shearer had no discussion. Gordon, 24, caught Virgil van Dyke’s calf back with a stud as he tried to close the Liverpool captain in a Premier League clash on Monday.

England International was initially shown a yellow card before the VAR check was made in the seconds remaining. Judgment Simon Hooper upgraded his decision to red after seeing the incident on the pitch side monitor leaving 10 men in Newcastle.

There was a quick debate over whether Gordon had received the correct punishment. But the club legendary Shearer who was in the stands was undoubtedly posted on X: “What a stupid challenge guy. It’s a red card all day.”

Gordon had already dropped 1-0 at the time of his send-off, but he saw Newcastle admitting his second goal within a minute of the second half. The Magpies made a brave effort and made an incredible second half comeback to make Liverpool Wonderkid Rio Nugumo 3-2 in stop time.

After a heartbreaking defeat, Gordon joined Instagram and issued a statement. “I want to give my heartfelt apologies to my teammates and my fans,” he began.

“My intentions were pure. I was just trying to create energy in the game and I made a mistake in tackling. I also want to apologise to Virgil. I’m not going to intentionally tackle someone like this.

“More importantly, I am proud of the time I spent on the pitch and the play tonight, and the atmosphere from you makes SJP special.

“I love everything about it as a club and it’s not just now, I’m just like all the other setbacks I’ve ever faced.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe saw one replay of the challenge before the start of the second half and thought Gordon was “slightly unlucky” to show off his red card. “I don’t think there’s any intention, and he, of course, came in too early,” Howe said after the match.

“I think he went for the slide and he tried to avoid damaging Virgil. It’s unfortunate. I think he’s a bit unfortunate.

“Everyone said it was clear red. My initial opinions were slightly different, but maybe I have sympathy for him because I have the wrong angle.”
