Reuben Amorim’s position as Manchester United’s head coach appears increasingly unstable following the embarrassing Carabao Cup defeat at Grimsbytown in penalties
Pressure on Reuben Amorim ratchets up following Manchester United’s humiliating Carabao Cup defeat in the town of Grimsby. The Red Devils’ failure to compete in Europe meant they were the first time they were in the second round of the competition since 2014, when Louis Van Girl’s side was humbled 4-0 by the League One costume MK Dons.
The pain continued as Grimsby gave the club’s first defeat in four stages. The hosts led at halftime through goals from Charles Burnham and United’s product Tyrell Warren.
Fire goalkeeper Andre Onana should have done better for the first goal and was embarrassed by the second goal. However, United fought back 2-2 thanks to a strike from substitute Bryan Mbeumo and a final Gasp Harry Maguire header.

Matheus Cunha wasted a chance to win the shootout after Onana denies Clarke Oduor, and Mbeumo sent his second effort out of the crossbar with a 12-11 loss that ultimately left a deep scar. The defeat continued to Amorim’s miserable record since replacing Eric 10 hugs, which were stolen last November.
Despite spending more than £200 million this summer, United have slowed its Premier League campaign. And after losing to fourth in League 2 now, critics have struggled to see how the Portuguese coach can turn things around, raising the prospects that he could be fired soon.
Speaking about BBC Five Live, former Chelsea and Celtic striker Chris Sutton said, “What an embarrassing thing for Manchester United. Where is Reuben Amorim going from here?”
Sutton said, “I don’t think he’ll get through this now… a tough night at Grimsby for the Reds,” he said.
When asked if United could consider the Amorim x, former Red Devils striker Louis Saha gave his verdict to ITV Sports full time, saying, “I think they have some consideration. They need to have a bit of a rough attitude.”
“They have to find a solution. At this point, we need to see a better, speed of play. All this is missing. All the courage, quality, that you expect from Man United, is not there. They have to reorganize and find a solution.”
Meanwhile, at Sky Sports, Jobi McAnuff pointed his finger at Amorim because he didn’t make the most of his expensively assembled team. He said: “You can’t just go (as far as it comes to players with low performance on players). For me, it’s coming back to you as a manager and saying, “Am I making you the best as a consistent group?”
“It may be apart of my belief in systems and formations. I don’t think he is. I’m looking at the amount of games he’s lost when he was there.
“Weeks, weekly, they’re not getting the level of performance they should be out of that side. Yes, they’re low performance. Yes, there’s a culture that requires a little shift, but he’s not making the most of that group.”
United cannot afford another set-off when Burnley gets a new promotion towards Old Trafford on Saturday. A short trip to Manchester City awaiting them on September 14th could still prove much for Amorim, except for the persuasive victory of the Red Devils ahead of the international break. Only time can be seen.
